A little hot chocolate on a brisk winter day goes a long way.

It wasn't that the cocoa warmed one up during the windy Sunday in Montgomery Township; it was that the combination of cocoa, food and community helped warm the hearts of the Harris Family.

Neighbors along Tree Line Drive held a hot chocolate sale and bake sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday in order to raise money for the family whose home and livelihood was destroyed by fire Jan. 9.

In the end, the effort raised $1,708.65 for the family.

Co-organizer Renee Johnson said it was amazing generosity from the neighborhood.

It wasn't just neighbors that came out in support. Fire Department of Montgomery Township members stopped by to donate money, as did Rep. Todd Stephens.

Joanne Harris and her family did stop by the event to thank everyone for their help.

Bottom Dollar, Rental World and Wawa donated toward the cause with muffins, pies, cups and the hot chocolate holder.

None of the parents that organized the event knew the Harris Family personally.

Last summer, the youths came up with a fundraiser for the Japan tsunami victims, garnering more than $200.

"So, when this happened, one of the parents said maybe the kids should do something, and the kids took it from there," said resident April Gaylord.

Those youths who organized and contributed to the event included: Chrissy Hermann, Colleen Costello, Madison Gaylord, Allie Hermann, Morgan Brett, Amanda Skidmore, Jaiden Johnson, Paige Johnson, Emily Baker, Riley Baker, Lara Costello, Anna Daly, Molly Ostrowski, Lindsay Ostrowski, Joey Jackson, Shane Connors and Brett Schwengels.
