Bottom Dollar Foods in Montgomery, Chalfont Closing
The Montgomeryville and Chalfont stores will close in mid-February, due to low sales
The Bottom Dollar Food stores in Montgomeryville and Chalfont will close by mid-February.
Delhaize Group, which owns Bottom Dollar Food and Food Lion, announced Thursday that it is also closing 33 Sweetbay stores in Florida and eight Food Lion stores in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
About 2,000 employees will be displaced in the closures.
Chief Financial Officer Pierre Bouchet said the Bottom Dollar Food stores were “loss-making stores.”
The closure of the three Bottom Dollars — the third is in Reading — and the Sweetbay and Food Lion stors will bring in about $40 million in underlying profits, according to Delhaize America.
The nearest Bottom Dollar Food will soon be in Ambler Borough, where a store development is in the works.
The Bottom Dollar Food location in Montgomeryville opened in late 2010.

Not surprised at all ... the last thing that Montgomeryville needed was a generic, low quality grocery story - particularly with Giant, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Redner's and Assi all within striking distance and Wegman's moving in around the corner. I stopped in once and my impression was just aisle upon aisle of pre-packaged, manufactured junk food.

Bottom Dollar was the only store in the area that would beat any other store, including Giant, Redner's, Assi and even Produce Junction's advertised price on the same item. Try going into Trader Joe's or Whole Foods with a competitor's ad and having them beat the price even if it was only one cent. I could go to Bottom Dollar and get ALL of the advertised sales at one location. I will miss them.

Up in Allentown Wegmans is less expensive than either Giant or Weis, and often a tie with Bottom Dollar. Except for the prepared / hot foods...

I'm really sorry to see them close. I shopped there regularily and found their prices and selections to be great.

I'm sad about this. I guess this area is too affluent for BD but it was a blessing to our big family.

I could get Friskies canned cat food for 46 or 47 cents a can at Bottom Dollar.
All the "so called" bargain super markets sell them for 65 cents and up.
I will miss Bottom Dollar very much, and so will my cats!

No wonder Bottom Dollar is closing in Montgomeryville - Aldi is right around the corner and is cheaper, cleaner and friendlier.
