'Fiscal Cliff' Debate Accompanies Obama to Montco

President Obama visits Hatfield toy company as part of tour pushing extension of payroll tax cuts.

President Barack Obama visited a toy factory in Hatfield Township on Friday, citing it as an example of the type of business that would suffer if Congress does not act soon to prevent the country from running over the "fiscal cliff," a series of tax increases and cuts in spending that are due to come into effect at the beginning of the new year.

In remarks broadcast live on C-SPAN, Obama called Hatfield-based K'Nex, which makes kits of interlocking pieces that allow children to construct their own toys, "one of the few companies in the toy industry that has aggressively moved jobs back here [to the U.S. from overseas],"

The President said middle-class consumers will have money "to buy more K'Nex" if Democratic and Republican legislators can "get out of our comfort zones" to reach a compromise that would extend payroll tax cuts. Middle class families will pay an average of $2,200 more in taxes in 2013 if the tax cuts expire, Obama said.

Obama asked that people make sure their "voices are heard" by their local federal legislators.

"I need folks like you, the people here in Hatfield and in Pennsylvania, to get this done," Obama said.

Republicans, meanwhile, said the "massive spending spree" of Obama's "Democrat allies" in Congress was to blame for leading the country towards the "fiscal cliff." A statement sent to the media Friday by the Republican National Committee said Obama's proposal to raise taxes on small businesses and individuals earning more than $250,000 per year would cause the loss of an estimated 30,800 jobs in Pennsylvania.

Locally, a Perkiomen Township business owner served as the standard bearer for the Republican message. Jerry Gorski, owner of Gorski Engineering, starred in a video issued by House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

"This notion of $250,000 being the top two percent or the wealthy people in America ignores the way most small businesses work in America," Gorski said in the video.

About a half mile from the site of the President's visit, a group of anti-tax activists staged a protest along the shoulder of Route 309.

The President traveled from Philadelphia International Airport, where he landed shortly after 11:00 a.m., to Hatfield aboard the Marine One helicopter, which minimized the road closures that would have been associated with a traditional motorcade. Security was predictably tight in the vicinity of the K'Nex premises, as a network of law enforcement professionals from across Montgomery County coordinated to strictly control access the landing zone.

We're at this crisis and this narcissistic President as usual blames everyone else but himself. There isn't one ounce of sense why a Jewish business owner would support this President while he continues to put a giant bulls-eye on Israel and supports the anti Israel force in the Middle East. The biggest groups of "Anti-Zionist" are allies of this President yet Jews support him. Please explain because there is no logic in that argument. It's also amazing how these Dem's who were so against all the Bush tax cuts are suddenly for them, except the 1% or 2% or except if the money comes from a lottery, sports, Hollywood, singing filth to the children or a casino. Who is boycotting; Jeff Lurie now worth a billion at your expense,Cindy Hill the lottery winner $287,000,000, Lebron James 45,000,000, Tom Hanks or Jerry Seinfeld $100,000,000, Stephen Spielberg 3,000,000,000, Rapper Sean Combs $550,000,000 or even Jon Corzine who lost a billion dollars 90 miles away and can't find it but he is till worth millions. They never get thrown under the bus because....they are part of the gang of Demo-crits that a hypocrite Democrat Be sure your friends (who you give you a week at the shore) and need to rebuild their $750,000 2nd home duplexes on the Jersey Shore don't get any of you precious tax cut money (they must be 2% ers) as you pay for a beach tags you morons and we pay Federal money to fix the beach. Have a nice holiday Mr. President why not spend it in Hatfield.

It is about time we cut aid to Israel whose behavior as an interest is not any better than Pakistan's behavior as an interest. Yes I do not use the word ally it does not apply.
A few billions kept at home getting our own house in order is far better than subsidizing human rights violations, settlement building, apartheid, and the numerous ignored UN resolutions.
Let them raise money through donations until the State Department wakes up and classifies them as essentially a terrorist state.

I find if funny that both sides keep talking about compromise, yet the only ones who have offered any type of compromise are the Republicans. They have come to the middle somewhat and are open to increasing taxes on the wealthy, bug only if the Democrats will meet them with entitlement reform...and the Democrats say nope. How is that compromise? Compromise is a two way street and so far the president and his cronies have not moved. Yet, the media spins this as the Republicans are leading us toward the "cliff".

I suspect that Bohner, who has not been able to lead the House very well due to the teapublican's and Cantor salivating for the leadership position, is holding out for the new Congress as a good many of the obstructive teapublican's were handed their pink slips in November.

Entitlement "reform" as you call it was crushed at the ballot box on November 6th. Why should the President allow spending cuts on the backs of programs on which he campaigned? The Senate has already passed a tax bill that protects the current rates of 98% of Americans. Why are Republicans in the House holding us all hostage?

I agree with you Thomas. While we need to clearly deal with the financial issues of this country, the self aggrandizing talking heads promoting their personal opinions and books on cable media and talk radio, are creating a hyperbolic propaganda campaign that serve their ratings and help sell unnecessary fear to those that are willing to buy their swill.

My prediction... All tax cuts will be allowed to end, which will be followed by a vote for retro-active tax cuts for those who really need them, not the top 1 and/or 2 percent. That way both parties can continue to blame each other for the increase in taxes (which will be short lived and not really matter) and get to vote for the retroactive tax reductions, allowing both parties to claim responsibility. Saving face and politics for those who will soon be running for re-election.

It is beyond me how anyone cannot put together that this President is never where he should be when leadership is required. After he watched four Americans denied help for seven hours and die at the hands of savages in Benghazi, he flew to Vegas to raise money. As Congress seeks to come to some compromise on our staggering debt, he flies to most likely the one small business in PA who supports him to yammer some more. A leader would stop speechifying and get working in Washington. And you all know, don't you, where he'll be as the US creaks and groans toward the cliff deadline of Dec. 31? But of course, on a 20-day $4 million vacation in Hawaii. The Hawaii press reports that the multi-million dollar homes at Kailuana Place, where the President stays, have been informed of the security restrictions that will be implemented for 20 days beginning December 17 and running through January 6.

Pat, I hope that you are on the payroll for the FOX or Conservative Talk Radio entertainment media. You did a very good job of repeating their propaganda and lies.

Now let's look at a few facts:
- On 911, about 3 Thousand innocent people died at the hands of Terrorists during the time that our government was dominated and controlled by Republicans.

- George W. Bush spent at least $20 Million taxpayer dollars (just) on flights to his personal ranch in Crawford Texas.

-During the two terms of G.W. Bush, the cost of operating Air Force One ranged from $56,800 to $68,000 an (hour).

-G.W. Bush used Air Force One (77) times to go to his ranch in Crawford Texas and when you use just the low end cost to taxpayers, each trip cost us $256,687 each time.

Seems like you are using 2011 numbers when talking about the President's Christmas trip, so let's look at that:

Last year President Obama's Christmas vacation costs included (everything) from transportation to accommodations for the First Family, White House staff, and White House press corps.

President Bush's cost numbers (only) included the cost of flying the president to Crawford.... The cost of transporting and accommodating staff, media, friends, and family were not included in the financial cost to taxpayers.

The facts demonstrate that President Obama is much more fiscally responsible when traveling on the taxpayer's dime.

The Democrats actually added to their majority in the Senate and made significant gains in the House (they may have taken back the House if not for the blantant gerrymandering put in place by Republicans just look at the jigsaw pizzle shape of PA's districts for an example). What a great photo of Marine One! Kudos to President Obama for getting out of Washington and remembering that our's is a "government of the people, by the people, and for the people". It is also nice to see our President recognizing American businesses, like K'Nex in Hatfield who are demonstrating true patriotism and support of America by bringing jobs back to our country.

Congress has a job to do and it is the leadership of those two entities that need to remind those who are currently sitting in the House and Senate that the American People have chosen President Obama and his agenda for the United States of America.

We the American people who voted for President Obama and his agenda for America also have the ongoing responsibility to make sure our voices do not become silent and continue to remind members of Congress that we expect them to respect the peoples vote, as this is our government.

Mr. Bobber, There are many many examples of the hateful racism directed at the President of the United States all you have to do is use your google search. Only those that do not have a clear understanding of racism and how it has been historically promoted through what is known as "dog whistles" to stereo type people of color. It is no different than the way racism was promoted about Jewish people and other ethnic groups.

Never in the history of this country has the office of the President been so horribly disrespected and we can start with a Supreme Court Justice who refused to have the Presidential Oath of Office in hand as has always been done and failed our newly elected President, of course their was the yelling of "you lie" during the Presidents speech by a Republican member of Congress. If all of that is not enough for you how about the photo of the man at a Romney rally wearing a shirt that said... Put the White back in the White House.

"Win our freedom back." That's exactly what the majority of American's voted for in November. Of the people, by the people, for the people... not by multi-billion dollar corporations, the robber barons, and wall street elitists, who receive some of the biggest welfare checks, compliments of hard working taxpayers, known as "subsidies".

The United States does NOT have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem. This is the fault of republicans, democrats, and the majority of american voters. Until the spending is brought into line, no meaningful progress will be made. The argument that raising revenue by taxing more will save us, is folly. In fact, the opposite is true. The more we send to Washington the more they waste. The more we tax citizens, the slower the economy will grow. When china stops buying our debt, the house of cards falls. I believe that most americans have a cursory understanding of economics at best, leading to poor choices in leadership. They believe the lies, simply because they don't know what the truth is. Educated voters are the answer. They will bring common sense back to the proper role of government, which currently possesses very little.

Here is some quick education for voters:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/biggest-holders-of-us-gov-t-debt.html

China owns a small percentage of our debt. They're not going to stop buying our debt because they need our consumer spending. And Japan is going to soon pass China in terms of entities to which we owe debt. We the People are actually our own # 1 debtor / creditor. I hope the economic knowledge you accuse us of lacking will be increase with reading the link.

In terms of spending, I'll join your call to reduce some spending. Instead of militarizing our national boundaries with Mexico, why don't we spend that money on finding, fining, and seizing the assets of employers who continue to employ illegal aliens. There will be less illegal crossings if there are few employers willing to hire illegals. Imagine the increased tax revenue from employers having to hire American workers at market rates, coupled with the reduced spending on dealing with illegal aliens. To go a step further, with comprehensive immigration reform, would grow our economy by leaps and bounds.

http://www.cato.org/pubs/journal/cj32n1/cj32n1-12.pdf

We also spend far too much money on prisons.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/03/us/03prison.html?_r=0

Our continued failure of a "war on drugs" is also costly.

http://www.cato.org/pubs/policy_report/v32n6/cpr32n6-6.html

Just some food for thought about cutting spending in several manners that raise revenue as well.

Obama has every right to come visit Knex in Hatfield, he's pushing what he thinks is the best agenda for avoiding the fiscal cliff. It's not like a vacation (though he's allowed to do that, too (maybe you should all give up your own vacations, & contribute the money to the debt crisis)).

Going over the fiscal cliff on purpose is STUPID! All the cuts are on just 1/4 - 1/3 of the budget, not SS/Medicare/Entitlments/DebtSerice.

I'm as Liberal as anyone, I voted for Obama, but I recognize that taxes will only ever be 10%-20% (at most) of the debt crisis solution. Those sitting the prettiest should pay some more taxes, but the rest of us will have to get less from the Govt. Obama said this himself.

Boehner, the House GOP, TeaPartiers and the Norquist Zombies should just agree & get over it. THEN they can turn around & say "OK, WE put our money where our mouth is, now YOU DO THE SAME." and maybe we'll actually get someplace. Many of my fellow Liberals are dead-set against any entitlement reform, we need to get over it, too.
Instead of the Ryan plan ("Here's a small voucher, now get lost you're on your own") we should allow the retirement age to gradually rise to 70-72 by 2035 or so.
It's already going up to 67 by 2025.

"The United States does NOT have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem. "

This is pure partisanship. The only objective truth is that we have a debt problem. Yes, we must solve it with spending cuts more than tax increases, but our taxes are much lower now than during most all the past 8-9 decades, increases are a *very* reasonable part of the solution.

"The more we send to Washington the more they waste. The more we tax citizens, the slower the economy will grow."

Your first sentence may be true, in a purely arithmetic sense, but it is unfair. Rightwingers speak of Govt waste like it's their one true religion, but the fact is every large organization, pub or private, wastes money and the bigger it is the more they waste.
Your second sentence is debatable, you are making a very partisan ideological assumption about where we are on the Laffer Curve, and not examining it at all. I see evidence that you are wrong. A good decade ago now Bush put in BIG tax cuts for everybody, that benefitted the rich the most. Then he cut Capital Gains in Half, almost exclusively a gift to the Rich, the so-called "Job Creators".
Maybe you didn't notice, but we are NOT up to our necks in good highpaying jobs these days. What we DO have instead is unprecedented wealth concentration, unheard of since the 1920s.
You give the wealthy a bunch of new money, and they do with it what they do best: Make more money for themselves. That's why they are the wealthy in the 1st place. Bully for them, but drop the "JobCreator" bullpoop.

Tea partiers and many Republicans need to wake up and realize that this is not white bread 1955 America anymore. The GOP will not win another presidential election until they change their policies and become a more inclusive party. Running Rubio or Jindal will not solve the problem. The percentage of white males in the total electorate is falling with every election. This challenge is effecting the GOP in the Senate and will soon have a much greater effect in House races.

You can stick that "Fiscal Cliff" up your you know what. Another stupid media talking point to shove down our throats. I'm sure our representatives both republican and democrat will be raising the debt a few more trillion while cutting programs for the public. What about cutting all programs across the board a few percent? Why don't they cut some of the trillions they spend on the military every year? Do we really need over 850 military bases around the world? How about cutting some of the premium healthcare they and their families get for life? What about cutting the automatic raises they get every year without voting on it? How about cutting the billions of dollars we give away for free to other countries, some which don't even like us? They wont even talk about real cuts and reform of entitlements. They trim from "baseline" budgets. not real cuts.
If you make 50k per year and spend 80k per year, putting the extra 30k on a credit card, how long will you survive? This is exactly what we do in the US. Interest rates are now at historic lows. We earn 2.2t and spend 3.5t. What will happen to our ability to service this debt when the artificlly low rates rise or when our credit rating is bumped down again? How is this responsible governance? How is this common sense? How is this good for the next generation? The drug dealers are in charge of the pharmacy. It's like you live in a parallel universe.
