I have a Heat Pump - the thing that doubles as a heater and air conditioner. It is so inefficient for the Northeast, I don't know why builders put them in. When the temperature goes very low the electric heat kick in. This wasn't so bad when the RH rate was in effect with PECO, but the PUC required them to phase it out so now all electric houses pay the same rate as everyone else. I did all the standard things to improve heating costs including replacement of windows and doors. Finally got a new heat pump which improved the montly cost somewhat (maybe 15%) but still Heat Pumps are not a bargain. Frankly, in my opinion, nothing is better than gas heat. {Linda Spreeman, King of Prussia}

Linda, I recently discovered that my external HVAC unit is equipped with a heat pump that was never connected. Maybe that's why. It seems like the sort of thing that might make more sense on an indoor water heater than an outdoor unit.

You can use geothermal technology or solar system to get the electricity at free of cost. By which you can lower your cost to its end. Also hydro power is been minimized such that it can be used at home. Servicing (www.airandheat.net/services) heating units on regular basis will also reduce the costs.
