Jill Biden Lists Ways 'Barack and Joe' Moved Country Forward

The vice president's wife meets with educators and campaigners at the Pennsylvania State Teachers Association in Wescosville on the eve of the Oct. 9 voter registration deadline.

A slightly road-weary Jill Biden addressed fellow educators, former teachers, campaign workers and students assembled by invitation Monday at the offices of the Pennsylvania State Education Association in Wescosville.

Space would only allow for a small group to see Biden, who started her day at Obama headquarters in Harrisburg and then traveled to Scranton and Hazleton before her last stop in Lower Macungie Township.

It was the last stop of an important day – the eve of the final day to register to vote in the Nov. 6 presidential election.

Getting out the vote was the theme sounded by the three enthusiastic Democrats who introduced her: Serena Villalba, a volunteer campaign worker from the West Coast; Easton Mayor Sal Panto, and Joyce Moore of Upper Milford Township, an Obama campaign neighborhood team leader for Emmaus.

Panto challenged each of 100 or so people in the crowd to register just three more voters before the Tuesday, Oct. 9, deadline.

The first words from Biden, who teaches remedial English about 20 minutes from her home at Northern Virginia Community College, were about her students.

“I started my day today writing up my midterm,” she quipped to the knowing groans of the crowd.

But Biden, who grew up in Willow Grove, quickly launched into the points she wanted to make about why President Barack Obama and her husband, Vice President Joe Biden, should be re-elected.

A continued investment in quality education is most important, she said, drawing loud applause from the crowd.

“The current administration has doubled Pell Grant distribution,” Biden said, "and has reformed the way students and parents apply for loans. The community college system, of course, is the cornerstone of higher education."

As a military mom whose son, Beau, served in Iraq with the Delaware Army National Guard, Biden is passionate about promises she said were made – and kept – by the current administration.

“The hope was that Barack would keep his promise to end the war, and he did. Osama bin Laden was brought to justice and now we can end the war in Afghanistan responsibly,” she said.

She also spoke about veterans benefits.

“The president and Joe are moving the country forward by expanding the benefits of the GI Bill, and by extending tax credits to businesses that hire vets,” she said.

“As a woman,” she continued, she is inspired by the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act signed into law by Obama in 2009, and by healthcare reform that prevents insurance companies from charging women more for mammograms and birth control.

Further proof Obama and Biden are moving the country forward, she said:

 * There have now been 31 straight months of job growth, which translates into 5.2 million new jobs.

* The auto industry is back from the verge of bankruptcy.

* “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the policy that required gay and lesbian military service personnel to keep their sexual orientation secret or face discharge, is history.

“It’s a better life today no matter what you look like, or who you love,” she said before making one more plea to her audience to register every voter they can.

“The voter registration deadline is only hours away. Be sure everybody knows they do not need a photo ID to vote,” she said before leaving the podium to shake hands, hug children, collect her daughter, Ashley, who has been accompanying her, and taking her leave.

Jill Biden's visit to the Lehigh Valley comes two months after Michelle Obama campaigned for her husband in Bethlehem. Neither Obama nor Republican Mitt Romney has campaigned in the Lehigh Valley this fall political season.

Joe Biden, a native of Scranton, will debate Paul Ryan on Thursday.

I am not certain what planet Mrs. Biden resides, but listening to her evaluation of this country is one from the elitist world. 31straight months of job growth? 5.2 million new jobs? Removal of don't ask don't tell, and everyone can love who they wish freely....I feel as though the flower children are next to come out and we can all sing the "I wanna give the world a coke" song. What about the world who protested against our country, gas at $4/gallon, SOMEONE taking responsibility for the death of 4 Americans, THE ECONOMY, unemployment, new taxation of Obamacare, national security and border control? WHAT ABOUT THOSE ISSUES? I assure they are considerably MORE important to most Americans that where someone is plugging in, and how much easier it is to place your child in debt by providing greater access to loans they won't be able to pay back as they remain unemployed after graduation...oh, what a beautiful world we live in and what outstanding leadership we have.....so warm and fuzzy! God Bless our troops, keep them safe despite the incompetence of our present administration!

Please keep in mind that the financial fiasco began under a Republican president who took this country into an unnecessary war based on an intricate set of lies, and who then cut taxes leaving behind no funds to pay for it. In other words, the economic challenges have their origins in the Right Wing war machine.

Frances,
The democrats controlled the purse since 2006. Nancy Pelosi was in charge of the spending bills that came out of the House 2 full years before Obama. The Democrats who ALSO voted for the wars had the same flawed intelligence as Bush had. We went to war because almost all the Democrats also voted to go to war. Pelosi and the Democrats were in charge of the money, so why are you not laying the lion's share of blame on the House under Pelosi for not coming up with the money to pay for the wars THEY also voted for?
Enough of "blame Bush" already. Democrats have had more control since 2006 than Republicans, and total control from 2008-2010. Why have Democrats NOT rolled back spending and kept their promises to end the wars?
Facts are a stubborn thing.

Frances, Unlike the sitting President, Bush did not circumvent Congress or the Senate regarding economy and war. Please dont misinterpret reality from politics? The previous administrations went through the proper channels, and yes, the Dems ran Congress, as well as Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.....blame the Commander in Chief all you want, but Bush followed the rules of the land. Your man follows the rules as long as the outcome is his way, and if not simply circumvent and move forward. As a parent of children serving this great country, I live in greater fear today than I did 4 years ago. This fear was escalated a few weeks ago when Americans were killed, and we, to this day, have seen zero from our leadership. Thes eclowns didnt even call it a terroristic act, and have blundered this completely. The SPIN was that the President was in Vegas raising money and preparing for his debate.....I guess what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, because he certainly didnt demonstrate any real intelligence during the debate. Stop protecting a clown! See the actions and results, and place yourself in a desert thinking to yourself "is this guy really have my back"? I can say most in 2 military Divisions dont believe that to be the case.

Ronnie and John,

Just so I understand -- everything that is wrong can be blamed on Democrats in office at the time, and the Republicans have no responsibility in the matter?

So it was Democrats who launched the Iraq War? They just dragged your poor little Republican heroes along for the ride? Bush was forced into it?

It was Democrats who pushed trillions in tax cuts, mostly for the wealthy, under the false promise that it would stimulate growth and actually increase tax revenues?

It was Democrats who blindly deregulated Wall Street, and then when Wall Street robbed America blind offered them a bailout with no strings attached or accountability?

That was all the Democrats fault, and almost no responsiblity falls on our heroes in the Republican Party?

Who is it that has issue with facts and reality?

Nothing is ever the fault of Republicans in your eyes because you are idealogues. You believe in something regardless of facts, and then craft your reality to support your ideology.

Nick, never said the Republicans had nothing to do with our present situation......but at the end of the day, you cannot spend 4 years blaming somebody else, then during a campaign for re-election pretend that your outlandish mistakes remain somebody elses fault. The gun dealer didnt commit the murder, the murderer did. Case in point, this "whole middle east thing", is not very good timing for the man in charge.....he has a re-election to concern himself with. Last I checked he is still getting a paycheck to DO HIS JOB, of which he remains as if the last few weeks have never happened. No, both parties are at fault, but the rhetoric of its somebody else's fault. As more information is revealed, you and the rest of this country will learn, from insiders, not political spinsters, that this administration DROPPED THE BALL, and Americans were killed. Not in war, not as soldiers, but as America's representatives. There is no one to blame other than those in charge.

John ease up on the violent metaphors. You might need counseling - seriously.

"This fear was escalated a few weeks ago when Americans were killed, and we, to this day, have seen zero from our leadership. Thes eclowns didnt even call it a terroristic act, and have blundered this completely"

So in 2001 Bush was President and 3000 Americans where murdered in NYC on a Tuesday morning. Despite the fact we know Bush was warned in advance, he did nothing.

Bush never "got Bin Laden" as he swore to do. Instead he invaded iraq, which had nothing to do with 9/11.

You thought so highly of this that you renominated and reelected Bush to a 2nd term.

Fast forward to 2012. A religion induced riot in Libya (not NYC, please note) and tragically Americans are murdered, one if which is a US Ambassador. THIS IS ALL OBAMA'S fault and he needs to be thrown out of office for derilication of duty?

Sound like John. You think like a Tea Bagger.

And on the economy.

"but at the end of the day, you cannot spend 4 years blaming somebody else,"

1st of all this is completely false. The President shows humility is admitting he needs to do a better job. But I see no Republican stepping up and taking any responsibility for the mess we are in, and the lions share belong to them.

Why? Because their policies drove us off the cliff. Massive and irresponsible deregulation of Wall Street and the banking industry. Wild Tax Cuts based on voodoo economics. Spending programs and wars without paying for them.

I could go on if you want John, but my guess is you have your ideology all set and are not really interested in converstation. You want to indoctrinate people.

Nick, from a guy whose Party has already claimed a PA Obama victory, you certainly appear concerned, as well you should be. Note...those who drove planes into our towers were training to fly planes under Slick Willie's tenure, entered this country all on Willy's watch.....and what was Willy's defense? "I did not have sexual relations with that woman".....guessing he too was a little busy to bother attending any meetings regarding national security....did we even have national security with Clinton, as he pretty much zeroed our military, see Black Hawk Down, but that's another story. maybe if you drop your moistened finger to listen what real people are saying about the attacks on our embassy. lucky Bush didn't have a meeting in Vegas planned on 9/12/01. Last I checked American people re-elected Bush. Hardly a Tea bagger, as I already stated that Reps and Dems made errors...but that doesn't fit your agenda, so you need to start the boring and childish name-calling. Your fear is showing, you boy is talking big bird while my guy is talking jobs and economy, and Yes, I support the second amendment, but have no fear, I, like millions of peaceful gun owners are not the people you need to fear....it's the people who refuse to see an unprepared man who came to a Presidential debate to 'answer some questions'. You are correct that you cannot change my mind, and I am not attempting to change yours.....but no need to name call, as I don't fear the fact that you support Obama.

Regardless of whatever else is going on, we simply cannot have this type of debt. Our country is going to be taken over. Either Obama WANTS this to happen OR is not very bright (which I doubt). We need to get rid of the debt and stop giving away $ that we do not HAVE. Most Americans waste so much $ everyday on worthless junk that is not needed. We all need to focus on the big picture, vote out Obama, and make sure that we get rid of the debt before we are owned by China. It can and will happen if our debt is not reversed.

Hope you're not counting on Republicans to reverse the debt. Not only have they added significantly to the debt under recent administrations (including bailing out banks), but Romney wants to add even more debt by increasing military spending. America needs a new path to take down the size of the debt, one that neither major party is offering this election, or has attempted in recent administrations. Keep looking around because more of either of the major parties is more of the same. The Libertarian candidate, Gary Johnson, is offering a new path, but regrettably he has been excluded from the Presidential debates so far. Listen to his vision for America via Larry King.

" * There have now been 31 straight months of job growth, which translates into 5.2 million new jobs." - This has been labeled as false by the factcheckers

See http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/election-2012/wp/2012/10/03/fact-check-obamas-5-million-jobs/ OR just google "5 million job fact check".

You'll also see some false statements made by Romney during the debate.

Also, last weeks "7.8%" number nothing to be proud of. Most of the new jobs were part-time, many likely campaign work related AND the fed government went on a hiring spree the last two months.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-500395_162-57526635/unemployment-rate-falls-to-7.8-percent-44-month-low/

Finally, just ask those with new jobs what it's like. Working harder for each dollar, prices going up, taxes going up, yet bridges, schools, etc. failing despite enormous deficits.

We need a leaner, smarter gov't. Not sure who can deliver that yet.

I just read a list of top donors to Romney and Obama. Wall street, big corps, trial lawyers, unions, etc.

What surprised me is "government workers" on top five list for Obama. I think the gov't needs to be reform and hope Obama can push back if wins.

"A slightly road-weary Jill Biden addressed fellow educators, former teachers, campaign workers and students assembled by invitation" ------ Let's take this 1 step at a time. Slightly road weary --- does that suggest that whatever she says should be taken with a grain of salt...kinda like the altitude issue in Denver? By addressing teachers and educators, I assume she was speaking with these selected people because she too is an educator. Supporting the Community colleges, because thats where she works and that is where the majority of low and lower middle income people can afford to send their children. Teachers are Unionized, so again speaking to a selected population. Students --- this is another group this administration is embracing....does someone see a pattern here? Unions and unemployed adults who both presently enjoy entitlements, where in most cases many are recieving some type of perk that the rest of the country doesnt get, namely pensions, tenure, and loans....I suppose speaking to like-minded people is considerably easier than speaking to those who might question the world seen through a life-long politician's wife.

But look at the comments on this matter. We cannot get our act together and keep in mind that it is we the people who look in the mirror every day, are the cause for this mess. it isn't Mitt Romney who stares at you when you apply your make up, It isn't Obama who stares at you in the mirror every day. It is you, me and everyone else in this nation who is RESPONSIBLE for the mess we are in and unfortunately few, very few want to do anything about it. Why do we allow our Senators and Congressmen to stay in office term after term and we do that at every level of government. George Mason, involved in the writing of the Virginia Constitution after the Revolutionay War, indicated to office holders that after their term they OUGHT TO GO HOME. Let's tell the currents holders to do that.

Mr. Weaver said "these" discussions, not "all" discussions. Pay attention. Any commenter can plainly see what Mr. Weaver means. This forum is highly unlikely to bring about change among its commenters. I am certainly not going to be swayed by the liberal rubbish thrown around here, just as the liberals posting here are unlikely to become conservative just because they are exposed to facts here.

I agree Katherine, the problem is determining who is telling the truth and how and where you get your information. They say what you want to hear to get votes. Comes down to your political persuasion, and what those people say, and are tell you is the truth everyone else lies. What kind of nonsense information is that. Politicians will continue to lie and deceive because it works, because people allow it to work. If one believes Obama is telling the truth, and one believes this nonsense there is no sense in any discussion. He has to lie what value is there in the truth looking at his record and his constant blame game.

Mr. Weaver, I'm not taking about Mr. Obama or Mr. Romney though they sure do get a lot of talk. You are right in saying that It is precisely where one gets their information that matters. It would be a justice if the people received it from nationally televised Presidential debates where it should be voiced from all candidates - including those in third parties. Upholding lying and deception because they work is not a pathway to honor. It should be time we hope more for ourselves, our country, and humanity.

Has my 401K gone up, temporarily maybe, the way they are printing money and flooding the market with unearned dollars and debt, we could never experience enough increase to keep up with the inflation it already has caused and ultimately what it will cost in the future. Dollars are a moving target , you could end up with nothing if things are allowed to continue in the direction they are. Printing people is a sneaky way of taxing the low and middle class , by creating inflation, they take their money and get a pat on the back. They know what they are doing believe me they just don't understand the long term consequence.

If we choose war here as an individual, maybe we choose it as our destiny. If we choose peace here individually, perhaps we will continue to find it. Choose carefully. We walk everyday toward our destiny, but we choose it right now by our own choices.

Freedom is an ideal worth dying for, many have given their lives in the past so we can freely express what we believe even if we differ. We cannot change people who desire to destroy us in the world. We can and should practice love, however, it will not change the rest of the world. If we decide to disarm as an example to others, we will be destroyed.

Of course we can change people who desire to destroy us - we don't have to do it by disarming ourselves, but by not bombing their villages and shooting their people. By addressing the true reasons for their animosity and defusing the rhetoric used to galvanize a populace against us. By proving that their leader's inflammatory hatred pales before the righteous wisdom of an enlightened free people. By not letting ourselves be hamstrung by the crushing hypocrisy of bringing freedom to the Middle East by enforcing a violent police state and installing leaders who'll act as our nation's puppets. This isn't a religious conflict - it's a resources conflict, and the powerful on both sides are leveraging the blind religious sanctimony and unquestioning nationalism to get people to die for them. Freedom is about more than self-governing, it's also about ethical freedom, and nobody has that as long as the yoke of murder, oppression and slavery is around our nation's neck. We aren't two dogs in a fight to the death, we're smart people who can resolve this. If freedom's worth dying for, surely it's worth paying more at the pump for?

Katherine

9:45 pm on Tuesday, October 9, 2012

We don't have to disarm to defend ourselves. We can choose to not be aggressors especially in conflicts where whole nations suffer the consequences with many innocent bystanders. Freedom is an ideal worth living for. If we are not living for freedom, we have missed the blessing of it. We are on the cusp of a new earth. We will not be destroyed if we keep a defensive, and let go of an offensive stance, but choose now to live for freedom and stop dying for it. We don't need to keep dying for it over and over. Others did that so we might know freedom; we honor them the very most by living for freedom now.

@Ronald- using religion as a political platform is far from tolerant and is extremely intrusive. And our country wasn't created on biblical ideals. That's a farce perpetrated by those who would seek to place their religion about others. Nowhere in the constitustion is the bible mentioned. All you can derive from it's language is that the founding fathers believed that man was granted inalienable rights. They never mentioned a specific God or creator. Many of them were secular humanity's or deitists. Sure, some were of Christain faith but not all, and that's why they didn't chose a national religion. Doing so would have nullified their quest for individual freedom and they knew that. Unfortunately, many who call themselves "conservative" do not.

@Ronald- references to God on our currency and public buildings began in the 50s as a reaction to our fear of secular communism, nearly 200 years after this country was founded. No where in the bible does it specifically mention personal freedom or life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Those are the principals that this country was founded on, not theocratic notions based on biblical thinking; which was tantamount to the system they were rejecting under the monarchy. It was God who gave the king his authority. The founding fathers, by declaring their independence, were creating an entirely new system based on humanism, not religion. Any attempt to ignore that is an attempt to rewrite history.

We all have the right to interpret facts, but facts remain facts. The future will determine the real facts about God our creator who is in total control allowing nothing to happen without his permission with purposes we cannot fathom but ultimately for good. Humanism has no absolute basis and changes constantly but what good remains today is the affect of Biblical standards throughout history, whatever parents teach and their life example passed down with humanism corrupting and changing as individuals see fit again with no basis. You better hope you are right, someday we will all give an account of ourselves, matters not what we believe about this truth. I am sure this is all hogwash to many, time WILL tell.

When looking to the Founding Fathers in support of religion, God, or their followers, you will find yourself disappointed in the result. Thomas Jefferson, one of my favorite Patriots, said
"The Christian god is a three headed monster, cruel, vengeful, and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites."

Ronald - you are stating that your beliefs about your version of God are facts. Your belief that nothing happens without ordnance from your God is simply your belief. The idea that every single thing every single person does is being directed through the guiding permission of another being is simply insane. We're doing people a disservice by pretending this is completely normal religious belief and not some persuasion of schizophrenia. It doesn't even make sense on a theological level - if God controls everything, why spell out the Ten Commandments in the first place? Removing agency from humanity is also removing responsibility from humanity - if everything is an omnipotent God's will, then nothing can be changed or improved, and everything we perceive as evil is actually an intentional good that we just can't understand. If God is so unknowable and contradictory, maybe we should all stop pretending that we know specifics about him.

There is a religion for every personality type. Some like to think for themselves and see the inherent beauty in honoring the principle that a higher being could do nothing more loving than granting free will to it's children...that is justice, that is freedom, compassion, the gift of time and endless opportunity...that is the higher standard and the intended promise of America, the New Atlantis that was initiated 300 years ago. My take on it after years of study, anyway.

Please let us focus on the facts: 3 and one half years of record unemployment tempered by an administration that decided they could just stop counting people after a while.
$6,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars in new debt that was supposed to "revive our economy"
A foreign policy that has resulted in the Arab world seeing us as a "punk" after bombing embassies and killing Ambassadors with no reply at all.
$600 billion dollars given to fake green energy companies who sprang up and magically went out of business. The only common denominator here was the fact the "rich fat cats" of these companies got rich on taxpayer dollars and also happened to be Obama contributors.
Increased funding for 3rd world Muslim countries who hate us no matter what along with educational spending cuts here in the U.S.
How the teachers, educators, administrators, parents, and taxpayers of our country could possibly think this is good for our children in the public school system is absurd! PLEASE get your information from multiple sources (liberal & conservative) and weigh the facts for yourselves as rational voters! The facts of the current POTUS record are indisputable (good & bad) as are his proposed changes to our ways of life (taxes, spending, debt, welfare, etc....again, good & bad). It's a decision as to whether each voter prefers to live the next 4 years under the current set of policies and those proposals laid out by the current administration or not. This election has nothing to do with Bush 43....drop it.

The Constitution is the orderly way out of our current situation. But like a fire extinguisher hidden in the cabinet, unable to put out the fire burning around us unless resurected by the voters and those we elect. The republicans had a oppurtunity to choose a conservative, committed to resolve the ominous situation we find ourselves in today, and for a number of reasons his voice was ignored to the detriment of our peaceful and orderly seocity.

I liked a lot of what ge stood for, but there were parts of his platform I truly supported, but there are others that caused me concern. His laisse faire approach to commerce and the environment, and his somewhat isolationist leanings with foriegn affairs seemed to allow for a vacuum of abuse and corruption. Still, I'd rather have his voice added to the dialogue. Just like Nader, more voices are better than less, and going by the dismal crop of potential candidates that the republican party put forth this election, it couldn't have hurt their party.
