Register by Tomorrow for May Primary
The deadline to register for the primary voting is Monday by the close of business
2011 is a year for local elections – municipalities and school boards will elect new or re-electing board members in November. However, before Pennsylvanians can get to November elections, first come May primary elections, which will be held May 17.
Monday, April 18 is the deadline to register to vote for the May primary election.
A PDF file of the Montgomery County candidates can be found in our photo gallery.
Primary elections in Pennsylvania are “closed,” which means only people who are registered in one of the two major political parties may vote during these elections.
However, voters who are registered as Independent can vote during these elections on constitutional amendments, ballot questions or in the case of a special election that is held in conjunction with the primary elections.
During the 2011 elections, races will features seats for magisterial district justice, borough council seats, township supervisor seats, and seats on the public school boards – the primary taxing body for property owners.
Voter registration forms must be received in person by the Montgomery County Voter Services office by close of business on April 18. The office is located in the Montgomery County Court House, on the corner or Airy and Swede Streets in Norristown and is open on Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
Besides registering to vote, voters also have until end of day on Monday to change their political party affiliation, or change their voter address in time for the primary elections.
To register to vote before the next election, a person must: be a US citizen for at least one month, a resident of Pennsylvania for at least 30 days, and at least 18.
Voter registration forms can be found on the Montgomery County Voter Services website, as well as in municipal buildings, post offices, libraries, and many other public and municipal buildings.
In Lansdale Borough, there is only one race of concern for the primary.
In Ward Three, Republican incumbent Mike Riccio is being challenged by Democrats Leon Angelichio and Denton Burnell, chair of the borough communication commission.
Either Burnell or Angelichio will face Riccio in November for his seat.
In Montgomery Township, board of supervisors Chairman Robert Birch, a Republican, faces no competition from either party.
The North Penn School Board has five spots up for grabs in the primary, each with a four-year term. All positions are at-large.
There are 11 candidates for five seats. Nine of 11 cross-filed, which means there are 10 candidates on each side of the ballot.
The North Penn School Board election could be decided in the primary. If the same five candidates are the top vote-getters on the Republican and Democrat ballots, there is no November election.
Incumbents Josie Charnock, Stephen Hladik, Don Hill, Rick Miniscalco and John T. Schilling are running for re-election. All incumbents have cross-filed in the election, as permitted by state law.
They are being challenged by Students and Taxpayers Expect Progress, or STEP: Ansanur Rahman, Alex Ryabin, Suzan G. Leonard, former North Penn teacher Carolyn Murphy and Paul Edelman Jr. All four members of STEP have cross-filed in the election, except for Ryabin.
Ryabin has the endorsement of the North Penn Teachers' Union.
One more candidate is running for election: Paul Unger Jr., who is registered as a Republican in the race.
