Sunday Evening Accident Sends Six to Hospital

Three children among those taken from the scene by ambulance

Three children and three adults were taken to area hospitals Sunday night, after a dark gray Nissan Murano collided with a light gray Hyundai Elantra at the intersection of Valley Forge Road and Steelman Road in Worcester, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The accident occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m., with both vehicles sustaining heavy damage.  Several people, including Susan Anderson, of New York, saw the wreckage and stopped to help.

"I stopped because I am a nurse, and I saw this (Nissan) over here with people standing outside holding children," said Anderson.  "I asked if they were all right and they said yes."

Anderson, along with another female bystander, walked over to make sure the occupants of the Hyundai were conscious and uninjured.

"We went over to the (Hyundai) and there was a baby in the back seat," said Anderson.  "A woman was trapped in the passenger seat, but the driver was able to free herself.  She looked like she was in shock."

As the other woman worked to free the infant and child seat, Anderson held the passenger's head still until the emergency responders arrived.

"I kept telling her not to move, and I held her head still until the EMTs arrived," said Anderson.

Upon arrival, emergency responders entered the back seat of the Hyundai, stabilizing the woman as members of the Worcester Volunteer Fire Department and Towamencin Volunteer Fire Company used the Jaws of Life to extricate the passenger from the vehicle.

Both drivers and all passengers were taken to area hospitals by the .  The extent of their injuries is currently unknown, though Anderson speculated that some may have been taken as a precautionary measure.

A member of the Pennsylvania State Police declined to comment on the cause of the accident, though he stated that they would be issuing a press release Sunday evening.

The scene of the accident was nearly cleared by 7:15 p.m., as both vehicles were being place onto tow-trucks.

"Honestly, I can't believe anyone made it out of there alive," said Anderson.  "Look at it. Thank God for baby car seats."
