PSAT on the Horizon? Here's a plan

If you are a parent with a High School junior or sophomore (or a student yourself) then one of the big events of October each year is the PSAT / NMSQT exam.

This exam serves a few purposes:

1. it is a 'practice' SAT test (in face it is very similar albeit shorter)
2. it is a 'qualifiying" test for the National Merit Scholarship program

At mAke the grAde we do a substantial amount of test prep for standardized tests like the PSAT and SAT (and the increasingly popular ACT) and there is a huge range of priority given to this test.  Nearly all  students will do some sort of  prep for the SAT / ACT exams, but there is a huge variation on prep levels for the PSAT.  At MTG we recommend a mimimum level of prep to include:

1. Familiarization with the test and its struncture
2. Some attention to each of the 3 areas on the test (Reading / Math / Writing)
3. Some focus on the timing and pacing issues presented by the test
4. Any hands on practice to increase the students confidence and familiarity with the test.

If you are not planning to do any 'formal' prep prior to the test, the students should strongly consider working through the practice test in the handout that the schools distribute.

If you are interested in discussing a PSAT (or larger test prep plan) or you just have quesitons... contact Dr Steven Greene at mAke the grAde.
