Earth Day Events Set at Montgomery Township

On Saturday, the township holds a curbside leaf collection and hosts an Earth Day event at Montgomery Mall.

Spring has sprung—and that may mean some spring cleaning in your yard.

The Montgomery Township curbside leaf collection is set for Saturday, April 16.

At a supervisor’s meeting last month, township manager Larry Gregan said leaves must be put in biodegradable bags and placed out on the curb by 7 a.m.

Gregan said all collected leaves will be disposed at Barnside Farm and Compost in Schwenksville.

The leaf collection is part of a requirement under the township’s membership in the Northern Montgomery County Recycling Commission.

“This is in addition to the monthly collection held on the third Saturday of each month at Windlestrae Park,” Gregan said.

The township will also provide a Dumpster at William F. Maule Park at Windlestrae on April 16 for residents to dispose of materials.

Last year, the contractor for the leaf collection had the township scheduled on the wrong date.

Supervisor Joe Walsh requested the contractor be contacted as a reminder.

Gregan said it had been done and had been confirmed for Saturday.

Earth Day will also be celebrated April 16 at the Montgomery Mall, an event planned by the township’s Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC).

Walsh said the EAC has been working on this project since the beginning of the year.

The event draws local state representatives, dignitaries and Boy Scout Troop 229.

“The mall is very supportive of the event,” he said.

Featured at the Earth Day event are paper shredding, electronics disposal and children’s activities.

“I’m really glad to see recycling of electronic components,” said supervisor Mike Fox. “It’s great to see us have a full event and an opportunity to get old computers recycled.”

Walsh said the mall is a great community partner.

“The mall is really good to work with,” he said.
