Art Education Center Opens in Horsham

Run by Sisters of the Holy Redeemer, the center features art classes and seminars, and proceeds benefit a transitional housing program for women and children.

Linda Arico is working to transform lives through art.

Arico's mission is two-fold. A Sister of the Holy Redeemer, Arico serves as director of Art at Valley Lake Gallery, which makes its Horsham debut on Saturday with an exhibit of oil paintings by three artists.

Classes–some for elementary, middle school and high school students, as well as senior citizens and would-be artists in general–will be offered beginning Oct. 18, along with art-related seminars.

"You can’t hang your work in here unless you’re giving a lecture, a demo or a class," said Arico. "I'm open to people teaching. The only people I’m open to are the people who are willing to do that."

Through the art education center, Arico hopes to help fund Drueding Center, an initiative of Sisters of the Holy Redeemer since 1987 to provide transitional housing to homeless women and children in Philadelphia.

"It’s an ongoing problem," Arico said, adding that she and the other Sisters will work, "until we don’t have homeless women and children."

Arico, who runs a frame shop in Huntingdon Valley, said the opening of the Horsham art center is an extension of her framing work.

"I’ve been running art shows for the last three years and it’s grown larger each year," she said. "People have ben intrigued about what I’ve done with art."

Rent for the former Homestead Inn and rabbinical school is being donated by the Drueding Center board, so proceeds from art classes and free will offerings for seminars can go directly to the transitional housing program, she said.

"Our motto is that we’re creatively transforming lives," Arico said, noting the dual mission to artists and women and children in need.
