An Ambler-based nonprofit that provides resources to families and individuals in life-changing crises is asking the public to donate toward providing school supplies for children in foster care.

Lutheran Children and Family Service, a division of Liberty Lutheran  is asking for $25 contributions to its "Back to School" campaign to give backpacks and the following supplies to children in foster care:

  • Scissors
  • Box of Crayons
  • Glue Stick
  • Manual Pencil Sharpener
  • Highlighter
  • Red Pen

  • Box of Tissues

LCFS states that the National Retail Federation's 2013 Back-to-School Survey shows that families will spend on average $634 on apparel, shoes, supplies and electronics for children for school.

LCFS said more than 3,000 children are in out-of-home care in Greater Philadelphia.

In Montgomery County, Bucks County and Philadelphia, LCFS serves about 215 children in foster care.

Peter Gottemoller, director of child welfare programs for LCFS, said in a release that the reimbursements that foster parents get are set by the city and do not adequately cover the expenses incurred for caring for the children in their guardianship.

“Right now foster parents are hitting the sales, wherever they can find them,” Gottemoller said.  “Our staff is working with them to prepare the children for the start of school, but any help the public can provide makes it a lot easier for them.”
