The Boomerang Kids Phenomenon

Coldwell Banker Real Estate partnered with psychotherapist Robi Ludwig to conduct a study on the Boomerang Kids:  Young adults who move back home after college graduation.  This study polled over 2,000 Americans ranging from ages 18-55+, of parents, young adults, and adults without children.  This study resulted with some interesting and unexpected conclusions.
The Background
From this study, Robi Ludwig concluded that there are two types of Boomerang Kids: those who regress in their growth towards independence and those who live at home with a purpose to continue towards independence.  Even with both scenarios, the majority of parents polled were accepting to their children moving back home.  According to the study, younger parents are okay with their children living at home for longer (6 years after graduation) than older parents who agree to a shorter period of time (4 years).  80% of those polled believe it is acceptable for Boomerang Kids to live at home if they are saving money buy their own home.  Although, 70% of Americans believe too many Boomerang's are living at home to avoid responsibilities and 65% are overstaying their welcome.  From these results, we can infer that although it is acceptable to live at home in order to save money, the majority of Americans will regress in their path to independence.
Effects on Home Ownership
Because Boomerang kids are moving back home after college and staying for longer periods of time, they're post-poning their own purchase of a home, as well as their parents downsizing into a smaller home.  This is changing the "traditional milestones" for buying and selling a home, which in the past has been after graduation to rent for a short period of time and then to purchase.  Although, some see this as changing the traditional trends for young adults, this can lead Boomerang kids to be stronger buyers because they have more time to work towards improved credit and to save more money for down payments.
