Dance Recitals

Saturday, May 31, 2014

Today I am grateful for Dance Recitals.  Our youngest granddaughter, Isabella, has her dance recital today at Immaculata University in Malvern.  It starts at 12 noon and goes until the middle of July.

My mom was a piano teacher for twenty years so I get it about recitals.  Performing is a necessary part of the process.  It’s the “big game” for the artistic types.  I love that Isabella is into the arts with her piano, plays, clarinet and dance.  I really WANT to see her at everything.  I love watching the kids perform.  Are you sensing a “but” yet?

Why do those planning these things have to torture us?  Don’t put 900 kids in 1500 dances on the ticket.  It’s too much.  I don’t want to leave after my kid performs because that’s not fair to the other kids.  Besides, why is my kid always in the next to last group?  I really do want to see it all. . .but how can I when the recitals plod through two meals, several dates and a billion time zones.  Or does it just seem that way?

Be merciful.  Make the numbers short.  And while you think it’s artsy to have dancers rolling all over the stage like carp on a riverbank, we can’t see that from the audience.  All we see is the toddler in front of us going into nuclear melt-down and an occasional foot flipping up into the air.  There is no overhead camera showing us the spectacular kaleidoscope pattern you choreographed like they were the June Taylor dancers on the old Jackie Gleason Show.  We don’t care.  Get ‘em up!  Make them leap and spin and, oh, I have an idea. . .DANCE!  That we might see.

I was advised by my daughter-in-law to pack a snack.  I didn’t listen last time and our blood sugar dropped like a bad day on Wall Street.  Fool me once. . . This time I’m bringing a snack!  Several.

I’m grateful we live close enough to get to Isabella’s dance recital and hope I’m still conscious by the time it’s over.  Will Donovan, Grandpa and her dad be conscious?  I’m not so sure.  Maybe I’ll bring a ball-peen hammer to put them out of their misery early on.  More snacks for me.
