Icicles

Today I am grateful for icicles.  The temperature here in Pennsylvania doesn’t usually stay low enough for long enough, so we rarely have icicles.  This year there is a bumper crop.

I remember when I was a kid my dad used to go out with a broom and knock them down because he was afraid they’d pull the gutters right off the house and kill someone.  It’s a wonder they didn’t kill him as he swung like Hank Aaron with that broom.  Glass-like ice shrapnel flew all over the driveway.  My mom would holler to be careful or he’d bust out a window.  When they landed, some stuck straight out of the snow like javelins thrown by jousters.  My dad, the knight of icicles.   We loved them and one year begged dad to let one alone to see how big it would get.  It went from the roof line to the ground, was about twelve inches around, an ice tree, and lasted forever.

I’m guessing that some of us are getting a little tired of winter this year, even me and I love the change of seasons.  But when the sun is out, splattering across a xylophone of shimmering crystal-like icicles on someone’s roof line they sure are pretty. . .as long as they don’t tear the gutters off!
