Open Windows

Today I am grateful for open windows.  Yesterday it was warm enough to throw the windows open for a few hours at least.  Instantly all of the newspapers, mail and other light-weight crap from our kitchen table re-located to the floor and the curtains were seduced into an outside field trip, flapping in the breeze like a Hungarian wash line. It was awesome.

After opening the kitchen window and feeling the soft, fresh breeze hit my face, I could not resist turning the heat off and opening the bedroom window and back door.  What bliss.  If you are still suffering in the frozen tundra, you know how special an open window will be when the temperature climbs to human.  I hope it happens for you soon.

As a kid I remember storm windows that had to be washed, front and back, then hung up every fall, usually accompanied by some pretty harsh language, in hopes of keeping ol’ man winter at bay.  Some of these old windows had a couple of holes in the bottom of the frame and a wooden flap that closed over them.  Even on very cold days, my mom would open the inside window, lift up the flap covering the holes and leave the inside window cracked, just enough to freshen the air inside.  I always slept better on days when the window was opened for a while during the day.

I know some people who sleep with a window open all winter long.  I doubt I’d do that if I was alone, but I for sure know I can’t do that with Himself.  He bundles up more for bed than he does to shovel snow.  I swear.  No matter how many blankets I have on the bed, he always adds another so he’s “toasty”.  FYI - If I’m “toasty”, I’m also homicidal.  Even though we turn the heat down at night, with him in the room it’s like sleeping with an old radiator.  Sometimes he even clunks and hisses like an old radiator if you know what I mean.

The temperature is going to drastically drop again in a couple of days, so I’m taking full advantage.  They’ll go up today, if only for an hour because I’m okay with the windows shut at night, but oh my, that soft, fresh breeze during the day. . . Heaven!
