Pastels

Today I am grateful for pastels. When we were cleaning out a bunch of junk I found a package of pastels I didn’t know I had. When I was a kid growing up the only pastels I knew about were the ones your mom made you wear in summer and then complained because she couldn’t get the grass stains out of those light colors. I was fully grown before I realized pastels were also fine chalk and not the kind you drawn on the driveway with, though that’s fun, too.

The other night, while watching something mindless on TV, I decided to play with the pastels. I have this new thing in my head (no it’s not a brain, wise-ass, it’s a different way of thinking) that tells me it doesn’t matter if something I write, or create on paper or canvass is perfect. Just doing it is what is important, since all creativity is subjective anyway.

With this in mine I decided to sketch an 8X10 still life. It was way more difficult than I thought it would be, mostly because I have no idea how to best go about it because chalk smears, but it was a lot of fun, too. I sort of pretended the pastels were crayons and just busted out. I ruminated about doing a third item, but the new thing in my head said I didn’t have to, so I didn’t. The wall is the third thing. So there!
What’s weird is that I declared it finished, but then after seeing the photograph I saw a few things that might need tweaking at the bottom. Still, I’m just grateful for the pastels. . .and that I cleaned enough to find them.
