Toy Trains

Monday, June 2, 2014

Today I am grateful for toy trains.  The other day after we went to the dance recital and had our great lunch, sitting outside in Phoenixville, we stopped at a flea market and chicken dinner fund raiser at a friends church.

We don’t really need more stuff.  We just cleaned out and got rid of a bunch of stuff.  I have books I’ll never get around to reading if I live a hundred more years.  My husband has enough toys, gadgets and gee-gaws to run a daycare.  So what does he zone in on. . .a large train set.  Three bucks.  I paid.  To see his face is worth the three bucks.

Yesterday we were moving plants around, rearranging a few pieces of furniture and generally straightening up when he disappeared.  I had sent him to the basement to fetch a pot and he didn’t come back.  Hearing odd noises and curious, I went to the top of the basement steps to look for him.  There he sat on the floor, with train tracks surrounding him and that three dollar train clipping along around him.

A true kid at heart, he looked at me. . .busted, and guilty, like he was ten years old.  It’s the “grandpa-is-getting-away-with-playing-with-toys-when-he’s-supposed-to-be-doing-a-chore” look all of his kids, grandkids and I know and love.  I’m grateful a bag of three dollar trains reminded me of it.  Bing!  Heartprint!
