Today is National Trivia Day! In celebration, the Montgomery County Commissioners office has prepared a list of some little known facts about the county. Keep these handy the next time you want to show off your knowledge of the area.

  1. Montgomery County has a larger population than the states of Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, and North Dakota and the District of Columbia.  
  2. In addition to the County Commissioners, nine County departments are headed by an individual elected directly by the voters. These nine officials are commonly referred to as "Row Officers," a term that came about many years ago when the nine departments were first listed in a row on the election ballot.
  3. Montgomery County is home to 7 parks, 5 historic sites, and approximately 60 miles of county trails.
  4. Montgomery County is the third most populous county in the state of Pennsylvania after Philadelphia and Allegheny Counties.
  5. Montgomery County was founded in 1784.
  6. During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army spent the winter of 1777–1778 near what is today Valley Forge National Historic Park in Montgomery County.
  7. Built in 1762 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Mill Grove (owned and operated by Montgomery County) was the first American home of renowned artist, author, and naturalist John James Audubon.
  8. Located in Montgomery County, the King of Prussia Mall has more retail shopping space than any other mall in America.
  9. In 1863 the War Department established a training center at LaMott in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County where the first federally supported black soldiers were trained.
  10. The county is named either in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada, or for the Welsh county of Montgomeryshire, which was named after one of William the Conqueror's main counselors, Roger de Montgomerie
