College Football Headlines - August 17, 2013

Saturday saw both highs and lows for many players and programs as some starting quarterbacks were announced, disciplinary actions were handed out, and injuries decimated teams. Here are some of the highlights I took notice of over the course of the day that also included the release of the AP Preseason Poll:

  • Auburn Senior Safety Demetruce McNeal (projected starter) was arrested on a marijuana charge and dismissed from the team soon after the incident. McNeal was Auburn's leading-tackler (90) returning while he also had 1 sack and 6 tackles for loss.
  • Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer announced a one game suspension for Junior CB Bradley Roby (projected starter) following his arrest. The Buckeyes open against Buffalo of the MAC on August 31 which means Roby will only be missing a trampling by his fellow teammates. Roby is a contender for the Jim Thorpe Award (Best Defensive back) and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year this season and had 63 tackles, 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss, 17 passes broken up, and 2 interceptions last season.
  • Notre Dame Senior OLB Danny Spond (projected starter) has announced that he is ending his football career because of a medical issue. Spond, contributing to a strong line backer core, had 39 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 3 pass breakups, and 1 interception.
  • California Head Coach Sonny Dykes has announced that the starting QB will be true Freshmen Jared Goff. It is the first time the Golden Bears will have a true Freshmen starter since 1999.
  • Auburn 1st year Head Coach Gus Malzahn has announced that Junior Nick Marshall, a former Georgia commit, has won the QB battle over Johnathan Wallace and true Freshmen Jeremy Johnson. Johnathan Wallace and Kiehl Frazier, who is moving from QB to Safety, shared time at the position last season.
