Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel Suspended for First Half of Season Opener

Breaking News

The drama has come surprisingly to a halt almost as fast as it had started, after just moments ago when Texas A&M announced that starting QB and Heisman Winner Johnny Manziel is suspended for the first half of the season opener against Rice. The announcement comes after a report surfaced that at some point today the NCAA would recommend a suspension to Texas A&M for the star quarterback. A suspension would indicate that there was in fact some wrong doing by Johnny Manziel behind the scenes with the signings that occurred. Such a short time period on the sidelines as a punishment is very mysterious to me considering NCAA precedents to this situation, such as in 2011 when Georgia's star WR A.J. Green was suspended by the NCAA for the first four games of the season when he accepted $1,000 after signing his jersey and selling it after the 2011 Independence Bowl. This is yet again another example of the NCAA's inconsistency when it comes to punishments and incompetence when it comes to handling situations. More information on the talks between the Aggies and the NCAA is sure to develop, but one half against a Sun-Belt team surely does not seem like enough for something of this magnitude according to how the NCAA has handled it. Texas A&M is very lucky with this suspension; they could have received far worse, such as three-game one that would force Manziel to miss a match-up with Alabama.
