Accidents Continue to Mount at Intersection of Main and Squirrel

A Tuesday afternoon accident at the intersection of Main Street and Squirrel Lane is the second in the last week, and one of many over the past three years.

A two-vehicle accident at the intersection of West Main Street and Squirrel Lane scattered debris and slowed traffic to a crawl on Thursday afternoon.

The crash involved a dark gray Honda sedan, which collided with a light gray SUV. Neither the drivers nor their passengers were injured in the crash, but both vehicles were towed from the scene.

While the drivers in Thursday's accident were able to escape injury, the drivers of last week's accident at the same intersection were not so lucky.

An adult woman and a teen female passenger were taken from the same scene via ambulance last week, after the vehicle in which they were passengers collided with a gold sedan driven by an elderly man. Both of those vehicles were towed from the scene, as well.

Though the intersection has seen a lull in accidents over the past year, this type of a burst in activity is not a first. Just two years ago, a rash of accidents occurred – sometimes multiple accidents in the same day. Adjustments were then made to the traffic lights in the intersection, which seemed to have greatly reduced the number of accidents, until recently.

As of Thursday morning, the lower red-light was out, when facing south on Squirrel Lane, but all other lights appeared to be functioning properly. When contacted by Patch shortly after Thursday's crash, Lansdale Public Safety Director Mike Sobel stated that borough officials were going to have the lights in the intersection checked out and repaired where necessary.

Sobel added that if assistance is needed from neighboring townships – the intersection borders Lansdale, Towamencin and Hatfield – the borough will reach out to them for help.
