Blotter: Men Posing as Roofers Enter Home, Steal Cash From Woman

The following information has been provided by the Marple Township Police Department. Any arrests or charges mentioned do not indicate guilt or conviction.

BROOMALL–On Dec. 5 at approximately 5:45 p.m., Marple police responded to the 900 block of Jamestown Road for a reported distraction burglary. Upon arrival, police met with the homeowner who told police that a man came to her front door and told her he would fix the roof on her house after noticing what appeared to be some loose shingles.

According to the report, the man wanted to go onto the roof and check them and requested she open the garage door for him. When the woman walked through the house and into the garage through a side door, she came back into the house with the man.

When the man handed her a $100 bill, he asked her for $60 in change for the bill in which she provided. According to the report, during her conversation with the man, the man was talking in a foreign language to someone on a cell phone. According to the report, the woman could not understand the language and had never heard it before.

The man then requested they check some rooms for water damage. When the woman walked into the first-floor master bedroom, she noticed a dresser drawer open, which she closed. When the woman asked him why they were checking a first foor room for water damage from the roof, the man then suggested they go upstairs.

When they went to the second bedroom on the second floor, the woman observed another man in the room. The man told her he was checking inside the drawers for possible water damage. She started asking more questions and the second man exited the home followed by the other man soon after, according to the report.

The woman observed the man approach a silver-colored commercial van with no ladder racks. According to the report, she believed the man got into the driver’s seat and the second man was in the passenger seat. The vehicle drove off toward Crum Creek Road. According to the report, the woman checked her drawers and discovered about $200 missing.

I hope this wasn't a senior, because really why is anyone opening a door to a stranger? If you are at my door and I don't know you, I am NOT opening it. I am not interested in any solicitation and NO ONE is obligated to answer/open their door. I had a bad experience with a magazine salesman once and learned my lesson.

Someone that lets a complete stranger into their home... There isn't much help you can supply them. Common sense used to be innate
