DA: Chalfont Officer Faked Shooting

The Bucks County District Attorney says a Chalfont police officer lied about being shot early Monday morning.

Chalfont Police Officer Jon Cousin, who said he was shot during a traffic stop early Monday morning, has been accused of faking the shooting and shooting himself.

The Bucks County District Attorney and Chalfont officials told the press Tuesday night that Cousin has been arrested on charges of reckless endangerment and false reports to law enforcement.

They said he falsely claimed he had been shot while on patrol early Monday morning.

Chalfont Borough officials have put Cousin on adminstrative leave and have begun an "employment investigation" into the matter, borough manager Melissa Shafer said in a statement Tuesday night.

"Based on a ballistics analysis and other evidence, the District Attorney’s Office and County Detectives determined that the shooting was staged and the story was fabricated," Shafer said.

According to 6abc.com, Cousin is awaiting a psychological evaluation.

According to 6abc.com, Cousin and his wife are the new parents of triplets.

Cousin said he was shot around 3:30 a.m. Monday when he was checking into a suspicious vehicle on the 100 block of Westview Avenue, near the Lenape Valley Swim Club.

He said he was shot in the chest, but he was wearing a bulletproof vest which protected him. He was taken to Abington Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.

Law enforcement personnel from across the region helped investigate the alleged shooting, searching for the suspects.

Shafer and Chalfont officials thanked them and the public for the "outpouring of support."

The shooting occurred about three miles from Montgomery Township and Lansdale Borough.
