Electrical Fire at Towamencin Condominiums

Towamencin Fire Company responded to a call from a resident who saw smoke and heard popping noises.

Shortly after 2 p.m., three trucks from the Towamencin Fire Company were dispatched to 604 Freedom Circle, on the end of the Towamencin Condominium complex.

"The owner said he heard a popping noise and saw smoke, so he called us immediately," said Kevin Pezzano, fire marshal of the Towamencin Fire Company.

Upon arrival, the fire department initially believed a dishwasher was the cause, but after turning off the circuit breakers, they realized the problem was located behind the cabinets.

"He had an electrical wire that goes under the cabinet, which feeds his garbage disposal.  The insulation on the non-metallic cable broke down, and the insulation on the actual conductors inside the cable broke down, causing them to arc," said Pezzano.

There were no injuries reported, but the kitchen suffered minor damage due to the fire department having to cut the braces out of the cabinets.

" Once he puts those (braces) back in, everything else should slide right in," said Pezzano. "Now all he needs is an electrician."

By 2:55 p.m., the threat was neutralized, and the dispatched units began to return to base.
