Police: Hatfield Man Drives Car Up Utility Pole Cable, Flees Scene

A Hatfield man allegedly fled the scene after driving his Ford Mustang up a utility pole support cable at Third Street and Mitchell Avenue Saturday night, and was subsequently charged with suspicion of DUI.

Seth Charles Vandewater, 44, of the 1700 block of Walnut Street, was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of DUI and other charges by Lansdale Police. He was released to a relative and will be summoned to court at a later date.

On Nov. 24, at around 11:47 p.m., Lansdale Police responded to Third Street and Mitchell Avenue for a single vehicle accident, police said.

Police found a 1998 black Ford Mustang suspended upright at an angle onto a utiltiy pole support cable, police said.

Witnesses told police they saw Vandewater allegedly fleeing the scene on foot toward Cannon Avenue, police said.

Lansdale Police were assisted by Towamencin Township and Upper Gwynedd Township police in searching for the driver.

A witness walking in the area reported seeing a suspicious man hiding between homes on the 700 block of West Fourth Street, police said.

Vandewater was found lying down between houses at that location, police said.

Vandwater is the registered owner of the Mustang, police said. Vandewater was identified by witnesses as the driver at the time of the accident, police said.

A charge of DUI is pending toxicology results.
