IRS 'Taxman' Scam Doesn't Dupe Lansdale Resident: Police

A scam that made a victim out of a Lansdale resident in May has happened again, unsuccessfully, on Wednesday, police said.

Lansdale Police said a "taxman" scam involving someone calling residents and posing as an IRS agent, demanding money and threatening arrest, which duped a resident back in May, was unsuccessful in duping another resident Wednesday.
On Thursday, a borough resident informed police that they had been receiving calls from a man from a 202 area code identifying himself as an employee of the IRS.
The caller told the resident that they must send $3,800, police said.
In a follow-up call, the caller told the resident he was a sheriff from a New Jersey cit and he was going to arrest the resident if they did not pay, police said.
A Lansdale Police investigator called back the 202 area code phone number and spoke to a man with a heavy accent who identified himself as "Eric," an employee with the IRS, police said.
When the officer began to further question "Eric," the line was disconnected, police said.
The investigator then called the IRS, and was informed that the IRS is aware of the widespread scam, police said.
The IRS told Lansdale Police that residents should report scammer phone numbers on the IRS website by clicking the "Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration" link on the bottom right of http://www.irs.gov/.
