Lansdale Police Chief Marks 25 Years of Service

Robert McDyre was recently honored with a certificate of appreciation of service

It’s been a great 25 years for Lansdale Police Chief Robert McDyre.

At the July 20 Lansdale Borough Council meeting, McDyre was honored for his 25 years of service to the borough police department.

“There’s a look of panic on the chief’s face,” said council President Matt West, garnering laughs from the audience at the meeting. He made the comment after referencing how people have become accustomed to the blue envelopes that hold certificates of appreciation of service.

“We have a very special anniversary this evening, and we thought it would be appropriate for us to recognize him in front of council, as well as all in attendance,” West said.

“You caught me off guard,” joked McDyre.

Mayor Andy Szekely then thanked McDyre for his dedication.

“On behalf of the Borough of Lansdale and everyone here, I’d like to say thank you very much for your dedication to Lansdale and helping us to achieve our mission of revitalization and keeping our streets safe,” Szekely said.

McDyre said he was speechless.

“It’s funny,” he said, “I’ve been thinking lately it’s a great feeling to know you have 25 years and you could retire any time and it could end at any time. It’s scary, but it’s good.”

West then told McDyre to “ease up on the retirement talk,” eliciting more laughs from the audience.

“The borough’s offered me a great life,” McDyre continued. “I raised three kids and put them through college. With the borough, it’s been a great career. I still love my job and it’s the best job I’ve ever had.”

McDyre became Chief of Police on Oct. 22, 2009, following the retirement of Joseph McGuriman.
