Man Fell Asleep, Caused Head-on Crash, Police Say

A North Wales man who police said admitted to falling asleep while driving to get a methadone treatment is facing several charges in connection with a two-vehicle crash that caused injuries last month. 

Lower Moreland Police issued a criminal complaint recently charging Kenneth Day, 28, of the 400 block of East Prospect Avenue, North Wales, with possession of controlled substances, driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance, driving on right side of roadway, careless driving and driving without a seatbelt, in connection with the June 9 crash that caused moderate injuries to another driver’s upper torso.

Following the 8:34 a.m. crash, in which police said Day’s Nissan Maxima drifted into the oncoming lane of the 2700 block of Philmont Avenue and struck a pickup truck head-on before spinning around and hitting a PECO pole, Day allegedly told police that he fell asleep while en route to Discovery House, 2755 Philmont Ave., for his daily dose of methadone.

Police said Day also acknowledged taking Klonopin. A prescription bottle was also found containing various dosages Klonopin.

During a chemical test of his blood at Abington Memorial Hospital, police said nurses found three 100 mcg/hr of Fentanyl transdermal patches, described as a powerful synthetic narcotic used to treat pain.
