Motorcyclist Killed on Route 202

Second local motorcycle fatality of the day follows earlier accident in Upper Dublin

A motorcyclist has died following a crash on U.S. Route 202 in Lower Gwynedd on Monday evening.

Police have not yet identified the victim, whose motorcycle could be seen lying in dense vegetation next to the northbound lanes of the roadway, just north of the intersection with Plymouth Road.

The crash took place at 7:56 p.m. and remained under investigation late Monday night, police said. Montgomery County detectives were said to be assisting the Lower Gwynedd Police Department with the investigation.

Police could be seen taking photographs and measurements in an approximately 50-foot stretch of roadway near the crashed motorcycle on Monday evening. A dark patch on the roadway, possibly skid marks, straddled both northbound lanes of the roadway. An area of smashed glass and other debris stretched north from the darkened area towards the place where the motorcycle had come to rest in the vegetation.

A second vehicle that police said was involved in the crash was not visible at the accident scene at about 8:30 p.m. Monday.

It was the area's second fatal motorcycle crash of the day. Earlier Monday, following a collision with a municipally owned truck.

UPDATE: 8:50 p.m. – The scene of the accident is on northbound US202, approximately 30 yards north of the Church of the Messiah. Lower Gwynedd Police and North Penn Volunteer Fire Company are on the scene. Fire Police from Center Square Fire Company are diverting northbound 202 traffic onto Township Line Road.

The investigation into the crash is underway and authorities are taking measurements of the roadway, which is covered with glass and debris from the motorcycle. The entire scene is lit with flood lights as authorities take pictures and scour the area for evidence.

Sergeant Rogge of the Lower Gwynedd Police Department told Patch he believes the crash victim was transported to Lansdale Hospital by ambulance. Emergency medical personnel "were working on him" when the ambulance left the scene, Rogge said.

It's unclear what caused the accident, but it appears no other vehicles were involved. There were unidentified dark marks and scratches in the northbound lane of 202, straddling the white line. Those marks could be skid marks or scorch marks.

Police have stated they will make more information available later this evening.

I believe this is considered Gwynedd Valley, not Upper Dublin.

DDarko, the crash in this story was in Lower Gwynedd Township, however, earlier on Monday there was an accident in Upper Dublin Township, at Bethlehem Pike and Hagues Mill Road: http://patch.com/A-xCSz.
