Police Searching for Hit-and-Run Driver

An elderly female driver of a tan Mercury Grand Marquis fled the scene of an accident at Squirrel Lane and West Main Street Saturday morning

are asking the public's help in identifying a hit-and-run driver that left the scene of an accident Saturday morning at West Main Street and Squirrel Lane.

The subject is described as an elderly female, between 80 and 90 years of age, wearing black clothing, police said. She was driving a newer-model tan Mercury Grand Marquis, police said.

The accident occurred around 9:35 a.m. at the intersection. The victim was a 78-year-old female from the 1100 block of Forest Avenue, Lansdale, who was driving a 1991 Ford Escort.

A witness and the victim told police that the victim was traveling north with the green light across W. Main Street from Oak Boulevard in an attempt to continue straight on Squirrel Lane, police said.

Her Escort was struck on the passenger side by the Mercury, which was west on West Main Street against a red light, police said.

The Escort spun 180 degrees clockwise in the intersection, police said.

The elderly female of the striking vehicle pulled over for a short time, and sat behind the wheel before leaving the scene west on West Main Street into Hatfield Township, police said.

A second witness attempted to follow the woman, but was unable to do so, police said.

The victim was not injured, but it is unknown if the driver of the Mercury was injured, police said. The Escort was towed from the scene.
