One Dead Following SWAT Situation in Montgomery Township

Unidentified man allegedly threatened his mother with a handgun, causing her to flee the home, then took his own life; Village at Neshaminy Falls cordoned off by police for much of Wednesday afternoon

A lengthy police standoff prompted by a domestic dispute in Montgomery Township ended Wednesday afternoon with the discovery that a 47-year-old township man had taken his own life.

Montgomery Township police said the man, whom they did not identify, had pointed a handgun at his mother following an argument Wednesday morning.

The man's mother arrived at the township police department at about 10:30 a.m., police said, and informed them of the situation. She told police that she had been unable to call 9-1-1 because her son had disconnected the telephone at the residence and threatened her with the gun when she attempted to reconnect it. She then fled the home in fear of her life, she told police.

Police and units from the Central Montgomery Special Weapons and Tactics (CMSWAT) team responded to the residence on Longwood Place in the Village of Neshaminy Falls, a senior housing development. Access to the development was restricted, surrounding residences were evacuated, and much of the neighborhood cordoned off as tactical units took up positions in the vicinity of the home.

Police said they unsuccessfully attempted to contact the man by telephone, then used a loudspeaker outside the home to attempt to reach him.
