Blast Off: Cub Scout Pack 229 Approved for Model Rocket Event

On Father's Day, Cub Scouts of Pack 229 will launch the rockets they have built over the spring. A Father's Day family picnic will follow.

Blast off Cub Pack 229 – your annual model rocket shoot is ready to launch on Father’s Day at Spring Valley Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Supervisors approved the event Monday night, and Fire Department of Montgomery Township will be there for precaution.

Troop 229 Assistant Scoutmaster and Webelos Den Leader David Eglin told supervisors that the event has strict adult supervision and it is sanctioned by the local council, Cradle of Liberty.

Only rockets that the Cub Scouts build between now and the event will be launched.

He said the troop was able to obtain a certificate of liability that insures the township for $1 million.

“I attended the launch last year,” said supervisor Joe Walsh. “The Boy Scouts do a great job.”

Walsh also talked up the amount of food that was at the event last year.

Eglin said it is the end of the year cookout for the Cub Pack.

Following the launch, the Pack will celebrate Father’s Day with a family picnic. Lunch is provided by the Pack, but attending families are asked to bring a dessert or side dish to share.

He also praised the presence and hard work of the fire department.

“I’m glad they have hard helmets on,” said Eglin. “Last year, one rocket came down and it stuck right next to them.”

Walsh said the firefighters that showed up last year did a great job.

Supervisors Chairman Robert Birch was proud to have the event in the township.

“When I was a Cub Scout,” Birch said, “I loved rockets. You’re bringing back a lot of good memories.”

Following the unanimous approval, the Cub Scouts applauded – possibly unaware of government at work and too young to get their attendance checked off as a Citizenship in the Community merit badge requirement.

“Now, you have to go home and go to bed,” joked Eglin.

The Cub Scout Pack 229 meets every third Thursday at Bridle Path Elementary.
