County Announces Mosquito Spray After Insects With West Nile Detected

Parts of Abington and Upper Moreland Township will be sprayed on Wednesday from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Montgomery County officials have announced they will conduct a spray this week in Abington and Upper Moreland after mosquitos with West Nile were found there earlier this month.  

Parts of Abington and Upper Moreland Township will be sprayed on Wednesday from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m., weather permitting. The alternate date in the event of inclement weather will be Thursday at the same times.

Areas straddling Welsh Road in Abington and Upper Moreland townships will be sprayed.

In Upper Moreland, the spray area stretches from Welsh Road on the south to Route 611 on the north and from the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Barrett Road on the east.   

On the Abington side of Welsh Road, the spray area stretches from Welsh Road on the north to Phipps Avenue on the south and from N. Hills Avenue and Kimball Avenue on the west to Coolidge and Preston Avenues on the east.

Residents within the spray area should consider remaining indoors, closing windows and turning off ventilation systems that draw-in outside air for the duration of the spray plus 30 minutes after.

“Workers will be using Biomist 3+15 ULV at a rate of 1.5 fluid ounces per acre applied with a truck mounted Ultra Low Volume (ULV) sprayer,” Montgomery County announced in press release. All spraying will be performed by Montgomery County Health Department.

In 2014, West Nile virus has been detected in the following counties: Adams, Beaver, Berks, Blair, Bucks, Carbon, Centre, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Erie, Franklin, Lancaster, Lehigh, Luzerne, Lycoming, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Northumberland, Philadelphia, Schuylkill, and York.
