RIP Mill Street? Hello Madison Street

Lansdale Public Works Committee voted 3-0 to recommend to council to rename the new roadway from N. Richardson Avenue to West Main Street from Mill Street to Madison Street

Lansdale Borough Council will see a 3-0 recommendation from the public works committee popping up on their iPads relatively soon - to rename the portion of Mill Street, from Wood Street to North Richardson Avenue, Madison Street.

In fact, the recommendation includes renaming the entire length of the newly-constructed roadway from N. Richardson Avenue to West Main Street Madison Street.

"Rather than continue with the practice - which is very impractical - we thought we should, now that it is built like a street, name it Madison Street so that it is all one street," said utilities director Jake Ziegler at Wednesday's public committee meeting.

Ziegler said the configuration of Mill Alley-Madison Street could affect future parking ordinances in the borough.

Another benefit to the borough in renaming the entire length Madison Street is the collection of Liquid Fuel Funds.

"Now, we could benefit from Liquid Fuels from the roadway," he said.

According to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Municipal Liquid Fuels Program funds a range of projects to support municipalities’ construction, reconstruction, maintenance and repair of public roads or streets.

Lansdale's allocation is based on its population and miles of roads on its Liquid Fuels Inventory.

Requirements state that a road must have a minimum of 16 feet of right-of-way in a borough. The driveable surface of a road must have a minimum width of 16 feet and a minimum length of 250 feet.

The recommendation will head to borough solicitor Mark Hosterman, who will prepare and advertise a resolution to rename and rededicate the street.

Committee member Jack Hansen asked if all of Mill Street in the borough - up to Valley Forge Road - would be renamed. Ziegler said it would not - only from Railroad Plaza to North Richardson Avenue.

Public Works Committee chair and councilman Denton Burnell asked if the renaming would affect residential addresses. Ziegler said there are no residences or properties that use the Mill Street address in that area.

Ziegler said future development could use that area as an address,

"In all likelihood, (addresses) would be Madison Street, not Wood Street," Ziegler said.

Committee member Mike Sobel said there are no addresses on Wood Street either. Burnell added that residences also front on either Main Street or North Richardson Avenue/Second Street.

I was just down at Madison and Cannon the other day, wondering why the sign said Mill St.
