The New Way Small Business Owners Build Trust Online…

Did you know that blogging builds trust more than any other online marketing practice? Read to learn why business owners in our area need to start blogging.

Here’s a question for anyone in Greater Philadelphia who owns a business, sells a product, promotes an event, or renders a service online…

Do people trust you?

Or more specifically, do people trust your brand?

This is not meant to be an attack, but rather a eye-opening experience for small business owners and anyone else looking to make an impact (and an income) online.

Did you know that blogging builds trust more than any other online marketing practice? It’s true, in fact 87% of businesses that blogged at a consistent rate in 2013 reported new customers directly from those blog posts.

You may be thinking to yourself: “I have a website. I even have a Twitter and a Facebook page for my business, what else could I possibly do?”…This is the general way of thinking for most small business owners. They see blogging as something that either is not relevant to what they are selling, or find blogging to be time-consuming, expensive, and non-effective.

Let’s break down one argument at a time, starting with one of the most common that we hear from potential clients:

“I already have social media pages, shouldn’t my audience trust me enough?”

The answer to this is…NO. While social media pages are a necessity to your online marketing and SEO plan, they are meant to be social platforms, not authoritative sources. Blogs have a unique ability to elevate your material above the fray of misinformation that exists online. For example, if you own a lawn care company and publish a well written and properly cited blog post about the optimal nutrient mix for golf courses, that post could be used in a college paper, an academic journal, or a monthly magazine. In contrast, no college student is going to cite your tweet or a Facebook status update, no matter how intuitive it may be.

Argument number 2: “There is nothing to blog about in my industry.”

Again, dead wrong, 100% of the time. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Frozen Yogurt stand, a Coffee Shop, or a Construction Company– you need to be blogging consistent and engaging content online. If you sell ice cream, blog about the ice cream making process, the ingredients you use, or why making your own waffle cones is better than buying them from the store. If you build homes, write up a blog each week that describes the aesthetic appeal of crown molding, or discuss recent architectural trends. There is always something to write about, and your business will always appear more trustworthy for blogging.

And our favorite argument, 3#: “I don’t have the time or money to blog.”

There is a validity to this argument – great blogging takes some time to get write, and if you’re paying one of your employees (who isn’t experienced) or getting one of the large marketing agencies or social media firms to do it, then yes, you probably don’t have the time or money to get it done.
