Chicago Musician and Local Poet Discuss Creative Collaboration at Ursinus College March 20

Chicago-based pianist, composer and conductor Christopher Wendell Jones and poet, lyricist and Visiting Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Ursinus College Anna Maria Hong talk about collaborating on writing songs and influences on the creative process on March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Bomberger Auditorium. They will perform "Devil Madrigals," a new piece. The event is free and open to the public.

Jones has a strong affinity for experimental and avant-garde music. He joined the music faculty at DePaul University as Assistant Professor of Musicianship and Composition in 2011. He previously taught composition and music theory at Stanford, San Francisco State, and San José State Universities, and worked extensively with young composers at Lowell High School in San Francisco through a Composer-in-the-Schools residency sponsored by the American Composers Forum. Jones completed a doctorate in composition at Stanford University, and previously earned degrees in composition from the University of Calgary, and piano from Indiana University and the New England Conservatory. Among his honors are commissions from the Koussevitzky Foundation, three commissions from the American Composers Forum, and a Cohn Fellowship to attend the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside, Calif.

Hong was a Bunting Fellow in Poetry at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. The recipient of Poetry magazine’s 2013 Frederick Bock Prize, she has poems appearing in The Best American Poetry, Best New Poets, Boston Review, Harvard Review, Southwest Review, Green Mountains Review, Verse Daily, Drunken Boat, Fence, Fairy Tale Review, 250 Poems: A Portable Anthology, Beloit Poetry Journal, and The Nation.
