Clean and Green Part 3 - Shredding

Identity theft is when someone uses your personal information without your permission. Millions of people are affected by identity theft each year. On the rise recently is Child Identity Theft, in which your child’s personal information is used fraudulently. Identity thieves know that you may be monitoring your own bank statements and credit reports, but are you monitoring your child’s? A great source on how to avoid becoming the victim of Child Identity Theft is the book, Child identity theft : what every parent needs to know by Robert P. Chappell, Jr. which we’ve recently added to our collection at Lansdale Public Library. For more information on identity theft and how to protect yourself, you can also visit the Federal Trade Commission website ftc.gov/idtheft.

Shredding documents that contain personal information once you no longer need them is a one step in protecting yourself from identity theft. At our Clean and Green Extravaganza this Saturday, July 20, we will be offering shredding. This year, thanks to our sponsors, Wisler Pearlstine, LLP and Whole Foods Market North Wales, we are able to offer the shredding at no cost. Richter Mobile Shredding will be at the library from 9 am to 1 pm with their shredding truck that lets you watch your documents get shredded via a video feed from inside the truck. You should shred anything that has your signature, social security number, address, and/or account numbers. Also, shred legal documents and medical documents that you no longer need, and any credit offers that you are not going to use.

In addition to shredding, we are collecting electronics for recycling, prescription drugs, sneakers, old clothing and linens, batteries, and more. Full details on the Clean and Green Extravaganza are available on the library's website, lansdalelibrary.org. The shredding and recycling are free, but we do appreciate any donations you can make to support our library. A special bake sale will be at the Lansdale Farmers Market on Saturday and we will have a carwash, used book sale, and basket raffle at the library.
