Town Hall: Events Coordinator Job Description Defined

The position would encompass more than just planning events for the borough

At the town hall session in Lansdale this month, resident Linda Breithaupt asked about the progress of the events coordinator position in the borough. Councilwoman Mary Fuller, who runs the town hall session with Lansdale Business Association president Doug DiPasquale, said the borough is at the state where they put together the job description. Fuller described the position as "a downtown business improvement district" official. "They would also be the executive director of Discover Lansdale," Fuller said. "It encompasses more than just events." The individual hired for the job would start new events and monitor current ones. He or she would also be heavily involved in downtown economic development, including establishing business …

First Friday Lansdale is Reborn

The event is under new management, so to speak, and returns to Lansdale's Main Street May 4

May 4 will be the beginning of a new era of First Fridays in Lansdale. The nonprofit Discover Lansdale has taken over the reins of the event from the for-profit North Penn Community Network this year. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and run to 9 p.m. It will be on Main Street between Railroad Plaza and Richardson Avenue. Passion to continue First Friday after NPCN dumped the event was shown by 311 W. Main Task Force vice chairman Charles Booz and LBA member Ellen Foulke, who presented their plan to resurrect it to the Lansdale parks and recreation committee in February. According to Mary Fuller, president of Discover Lansdale, the event will occur every month in 2012 through December. "I am very excited that First Fridays are starting back …

Get your facts straight!!! NPCN did not dump this event. The Borough forced that this group take over the event. NPCN did a lot for downtown Lansdale and the local businesses in that community.   more ›

First Friday Lansdale Returns May 4

New nonprofit Discover Lansdale, along with a coalition of local business owners, has taken over the organization of First Fridays

It's now not for profit and it's under new management. First Friday in Lansdale is returning May 4 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., as announced Tuesday by the newly-formed nonprofit Discover Lansdale. While in the embryonic stages, the return of First Friday will have live music, food and vendors.  According to its website, the inaugural event will feature a number of noteworthy bands. "Organized by Discover Lansdale, the mission of First Friday is to provide a lively place in the heart of Lansdale where the local community can gather each month," states the website. North Penn Community Network has organized First Friday for the past two years. According to WHYY Newsworks, NPCN decided to no longer organize the event, so three business owners took…

Stakeholders Walk Potential 'Lights on Whites' Relocation

Whites Road Park would be a safety issue for the Christmas lights display, so the organizers walked Madison and Main streets to get an idea of a potential new location

With visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads, stakeholders in the Lights in Lansdale Christmas light extravaganza took a walk along Madison Street to discuss their visions for the new avenue of lights. Originally titled "Lights on Whites", the display is now being discussed as a potential three-phase project, with the focus of year one being on a decorative loop from Main Street through Madison Street. Year two would expand to the Wood-Vine connector, which will nearly double the display, and the third year will be the piece-de-resistance, with the display running the Madison Street loop, the Wood-Vine connector and ending with the Lights on Whites display. “We want to make Lansdale a gigantic Christmas town,” said Keith Heffintrayer…

Will there be any lights for Hanukkah among this display? I'm concerned about the wording that says "Christmas" and not "holiday."   more ›

Council OKs $40K Business Improvement Contract

Delta Development Group, who is assessing the borough's parking, will develop a plan for a Business Improvement District. Council voted 7-2 to approve the contract

The 311 W. Main Task Force is still in the early stages of finding the purpose – and the funding – of the former arts center on Main Street. North Star Destination Strategies is still in the early stages of finding the identity and brand of Lansdale Borough. BPG Properties Ltd. is still in the preliminary stages of designing a retail Mecca and parking garage at Madison Parking Lot. With all that on their plate, borough council found room to approve this month a $40,000 contract with Delta Development Group to design and assess a Business Improvement District in downtown Lansdale. If Delta Development Group sounds familiar, that’s because it is the group contracted by the Lansdale Parking Authority to develop a parking improvement plan in …

Lansdale Sets Sights on 'Lights on White's'

Lansdale residents Keith and Kristen Heffintrayer have a bright idea for a new holiday event at White's Road Park

Lansdale residents Keith and Kristen Heffintrayer have a bright idea for in wintertime. The couple proposed an event to the Lansdale Borough Economic Development Committee Monday night – Lights on White’s. The concept: a Christmas light display located along the walking trail of White’s Road Park during the holiday season of 2012. “Honestly, we were just tired of driving up to Allentown each year,” Keith said of the inspiration for the Lansdale event, referencing that city’s “Lights in the Parkway” annual event. “Lansdale already has established holiday traditions, including the tree lighting at Railroad Plaza, the Santa House, the lights and decorations down Main and Broad, and the recently-added Lansdale Business Association’s Holiday …

Bravo to the Heffintrayers' for taking the initiative on what I believe is a terrific idea! I noticed that The Patch and others started providing lists (with map links) to local Christmas displays this year, and our family loved riding around at Christmas to see all the lights. Apparently lots of others do too! The Heffintrayers and the borough are onto a winner here! I also believe it's a good …   more ›

First the Consultant, Then the Money

The 311 W. Main Task Force is relying on an arts and entertainment consultant to guide them toward fundraising to cover the $3.4 million cost of fixing the former arts center

The words “money” or “funding” won’t show up on the 311 W. Main Task Force agenda until an arts and entertainment consultant is hired to steer them in the right direction. “We want to seek professional help from a professional group that does this,” said chairman Mike Sobel at the Feb. 7 meeting. “We want to do it once, do it right and get it done right. Failure is not an option.” Lansdale Parks and Recreation Director Carl Saldutti said the borough would be interviewing three consultants this week. It would be the second round of interviews, as respondents from the first Request for Proposals didn’t live up to what the task force was looking for in a consultant. He said eight proposals were submitted, and task force members ranked each …
