The April 27 North Penn Police Activities League fundraiser for teenage Lansdale leukemia patient Matthew Knoebel is getting bigger and better by the month. The highlights of the event, running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Penndale Middle School in Lansdale, are three youth versus cops basketball games and two Old Navy teen fashion shows with local North Penn School District boys and girls as models. On top of that, there will be food, beverages, a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction and a basket auction. Auction items donated thus far include: The event isn't without its appearances either. An Old Navy-sponsored fashion show, a "cops vs. kids" Round Robin basketball tournament, a half-court shot contest, a silent auction, Chase Utley autographs, North Penn and Lansdale Catholic sports team volunteers, raffles, hot dogs, sumo fat suit wrestling. Upper Gwynedd Fire Department members visited the home of leukemia patient Matthew Knoebel, 13, at his Lansdale home Tuesday night, where they presented a check of more than $1,500 in proceeds from a special hoagie sale last Saturday.
There wasn't a dry eye on Poplar Street Tuesday night. Matthew Knoebel, 13, and his mother, Christina Simpson, stood out front of their home, with tears down their faces, and welcomed the heroes at their doorstep. The red lights from the engine and the tower ladder truck of Upper Gwynedd Fire Department illuminated the entire length of the quiet Lansdale street on a crisp February night — this time they were not signaling for an emergency. They were beacons of charity. Family and friends of a Lansdale youth and a Penndale seventh-grader who is battling acute myeloid leukemia have organized a blood and platelet drive at Corpus Christi Church on Saturday, in conjunction with the American Red Cross and the National Marrow Donor Program. Plugged as "Matthew Knoebel's Birthday Blood and Platelet Drive Bash," the public event takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the church at 900 Sumneytown Pike in Upper Gwynedd.
