Family and friends of Matthew Knoebel, a 12-year-old Penndale Middle Schooler fighting leukemia, held a pancake breakfast fundraiser at Applebee's in Hatfield on Sunday
More than 300 family, friends and strangers came out Sunday morning to a sold-out pancake breakfast fundraiser at Applebee's in Hatfield for 12-year-old Matthew Knoebel, a Lansdale boy battling leukemia at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The event was organized by Upper Gwynedd resident Shannon McNally, and Knoebel's aunts, Mary Aderman, of Lansdale, and Kellie Simpson, of Upper Gwynedd. "There have been a lot of people coming in that don't even know Matthew," McNally said. "It spread from word of mouth." McNally and company sold 300 tickets at $8 for adults and $5 for children. Matthew Knoebel, 12, a Penndale Middle Schooler, is currently battling leukemia at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and a donor will be needed. A pancake fundraiser is set for Dec. 16 in Hatfield, as well as a hot chocolate sale

On Halloween, Knoebel and his mom spent the afternoon watching Jim Gaffigan’s “Beyond the Pale.” Later that night, Christina took a Halloween bag of candy to her son, which was donated through Altoona’s “Make a …

About 130 people arrived to get their fill of pancakes and sausage, with proceeds going to the school
Last year, the 2nd annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser brought in 91 people, much to the delight of the York Avenue Elementary staff, as well as the students and parents who chose to help out. "Last year was a successful fundraiser for us," said Heather Mann, principal of York Avenue Elementary. So what did she think when she learned that the number of attendees increased by nearly 40? "That's incredible!" said Mann. The fundraiser ran from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Applebee's located in Ralph's Corner. As soon as they entered the building, hungry patrons were treated to a smiling welcome by Nancy Kaufman, an ESL teacher at York Avenue Elementary. Once seated, a variety of children from the school took orders, brought out …
