Nothing in Life is Free – Except a Tree

Montgomery Township residents took advantage of the tree giveaway last Saturday for Arbor Day

They say nothing in life is free—except for a tree, maybe. Last Saturday, more than 150 Montgomery Township residents took advantage of the 14th free tree giveaway during an Arbor Day event at Gazebo Park. Jeff Hill, of Neshaminy Falls, took home two persimmon trees and a pussy willow tree. It was his third time taking advantage of the giveaway. “The trees they give out here are usually very good trees,” Hill said. “They are healthy and live well.” He said the giveaway was a good thing. “Anything you can get free from the township is a good thing,” he said. Hill owns a three-acre property in upstate Tioga County in the Marcellus Shale region, and that’s where the persimmons will call home. Hill made sure to get a male and female persimmon…

Five Things to Know Today

Wiffle ball, car washes and Arbor Day. Is summer here or what?

1. Montgomery Elementary sixth graders hold a car wash today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fire Department of Montgomery Township also holds a car wash from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its two stations: 202 and Montgomery Drive, and 325 Stump Road. 2. The Great Strides walk takes place today at 10 a.m. at Central Park in Doylestown. Great Strides is a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. Montgomery Township resident and Lansdale Catholic student Veronica Grosse will lead Team Sam’s Story, in memory of her sister, Samantha, who died of the disease. 3. Free Trees for Arbor Day

The township celebrates its 15th year with an Arbor Day event for its Tree City USA distinction.

Environmental benefits take root April 30 in Montgomery Township. On Monday night, supervisors passed a proclamation designating April 30 as Arbor Day in the township as part of its Tree City USA program. With that comes free trees for township residents. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. Supervisor and liaison to the Shade Tree Commission Mike Fox said it will be the township Shade Tree Commission’s 15th year of celebrating Arbor Day. “Once again, we have about 500 trees this year,” Fox said. “There are a number of types of trees that are annually picked to be part of the giveaway.” Species of trees include blue birch, serviceberry, …
