Lansdale Historical Society has named author and historian John L. Ruth as recipient for the 2013 Edwin G. Holl Historic Achivement Award. Ruth will be given the award at an April 9 annual banquet at William Penn Inn.
Lansdale Historical Society has tapped a Lower Salford Township author and Mennonite historian as its recipient of the 2013 Edwin G. Holl Historic Achivement Award. John L. Ruth, 83, will be bestowed the honor at a public April 9 annual Lansdale Historical Society banquet at William Penn Inn in Lower Gwynedd. "John Ruth’s contributions to our region’s history are sometimes understated,” said Lansdale Historical Society President Dick Shearer. "They shouldn’t be, because his books and essays, films, lectures and wealth of background knowledge have enabled so many of us to appreciate the faith and traditions of the Mennonite community." Ruth's work, Shearer said, has helped preserve Mennonite history and foster understanding in the North …

For the past eight years, I have had the absolute privilege of sponsoring an essay contest for the 7th grade students at the former St. Stanislaus School, now Mater Dei, in Lansdale, based upon a pair of inspirational fiction novels I’d written years ago. The essay contest has evolved gradually over this time period. Fresh categories created outside the realm of rewarding just the best writers has opened up new opportunities for its participants. With the eager support and advice from Mater Dei teacher and huge supporter, Bonnie Marino, this leverage has enabled me - as the single judge in the competition - enhanced opportunities to reward more students for their writing efforts. The fairly new essay category of "Inspirational Writing" was…

Gary Kaschak, author of "Hands that Break ... Hands that Heal" and "The Hole to China" and owner of Sterling Optical in Montgomery Mall, award $1,300 in tuition reimbursements to seventh graders as part of an essay contest
When you write from the heart, you get some money for school. On Tuesday, eight seventh-graders at St. Stanislaus Parish School were awarded, in total, $1,300 for tuition reimbursement for essays they wrote in response to their readings of two novels by New Jersey resident and author Gary Kaschak. Kaschak, who also owns Sterling Optical in Montgomery Mall, paid the rewards himself to the students on behalf of the business. The challenge of the seventh graders was to identify a hero in their lives who connected in some way to a character in one of two of Kaschak's books: "Hands that Break ... Hands that Heal" and "The Hole to China." Kaschak read aloud the essays he selected as the winners and subsequently presented each student with a …

Something keeps on drawing illustrator Floyd Cooper back to North Penn. Cooper returned again on Tuesday, this time to Knapp Elementary, where he spent the day talking to primary school students about never giving up. “I’m here talking about my work and instilling my message of hope and not giving up,” Cooper said. “It’s about holding fast to one’s dreams.” Dawn McFadden, reading specialist at Knapp, said Cooper’s presence was two-fold. “We felt it was important to bring an author in to expose children to Mr. Cooper’s work and writing and illustrating, and the importance of Mr. Cooper’s …
