Don't run from the cops; run for them. The June 15 event is a revival of a former 5K run that never gained speed. An open house at Towamencin Township Police will follow the 5K.
Don't run from the cops; run for them. Registration is now open for The Towamencin Police Benevolent Association "Five-0 5K" Run and Walk, set for June 15 at 9 a.m. The first annual event is somewhat of a revival of a former run that had dropped off, according to Towamencin Police Specialist Kelly Palermo. "We are bringing it back again," she said. There are 15 runners registered as of Wednesday. Palermo is hoping for 200 runners. The 5K will begin at the Towamencin Township Police headquarters at Troxel and Snyder roads. It was a case of come one, come all when local shoppers and supporters stopped in Old Navy at Airport Square in Montgomery Township Saturday for a bake sale fundraiser to support Matthew Knoebel, 13, and his family. Knoebel, a Penndale Middle Schooler, is battling acute myeloid leukemia and is awaiting a bone marrow transplant this month. Old Navy brought out businesses like Cardano Realtors, Chantilly Floral Boutique, Theraplay and Wells Fargo to support the cause. North Penn YMCA had a table at the store, as did North Penn Police Activities League. There was also a face painting table in the back of the store manned by associate Ali Moore. The North Penn Police Activities League is in the early planning stages of a fundraiser full of flair to benefit 13-year-old Matthew Knoebel, of Lansdale. Early ideas include an Old Navy-sponsored fashion show and a cops vs. kids basketball game
An Old Navy-sponsored fashion show, a "cops vs. kids" Round Robin basketball tournament, a half-court shot contest, a silent auction, Chase Utley autographs, North Penn and Lansdale Catholic sports team volunteers, raffles, hot dogs, sumo fat suit wrestling. The G-Riders charitable cycling team kicked off their 2013 fundraising campaign at Penguin's Pub on Saturday night.
The G-Riders charitable cycling team kicked off their 2013 fundraising season with a boom on Saturday night, hosting their annual "Cheers Charity" event at Penguin's Pub in Warminster. All benefits from the fundraiser are donated to various local and national charities, including the Irish Pub Daniel Faulkner Fund, the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, the Indian Creek Foundation and the American Diabetes Foundation. To date, the team has raised over $70,000 for their respective charities. The special hoagie sale benefits Matthew Knoebel, a Lansdale teen battling leukemia at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Snow won't stop Upper Gwynedd Fire Department and Upper Gwynedd Mommy Market from making the life of a leukemia patient better. The special hoagie sale to benefit Lansdale teen Matthew Knoebel is still scheduled for Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. "We have started prepping all the supplies for the event and are so excited to bring this back to help out such a young boy and his fight," states the public Facebook event page. All proceeds will go to Knoebel and his family to help with medical costs. Knoebel, 13, was diagnosed in October with acute myeloid leukemia and awaits a bone marrow transplant. The Knights for Life Foundation is a resource for the North Penn community that assists individuals and families who are facing issues with health or who experienced a profound loss. The foundation was made in memory of Mike Saks and Chris Melchior
Once a North Penn Knight, always a North Penn Knight. Knights For Life is a nonprofit organization that began around 2009, when co-founder Steve Melchior's brother, Chris, succumbed to colon cancer at age 46. Then, three years later, former North Penn teacher Mike Saks, a closed friend of 1985 grad Chris Melchior, succumbed to a brain tumor in January 2012. In death, these North Penn Knights are renewing lives. "The families felt such a great sense of strength from their community and friends," said Knights For Life member Karen Rowland. Marguerite Burke Miller is a cancer survivor three times over. Her battle is back again, in the form of Stage 4 ovarian cancer. Miller, an Archbishop Ryan alumnus and a mother of two living in Fort Myers, FL, has also been on dialysis ever since the chemotherapy damaged her kidneys. Miller is the cousin of Upper Gwynedd resident Joe Swaim, of Mifflin Drive. He and his wife Janet, along with Gina Burke Kuzemka of Somers Point, NJ, have organized a beef and beer benefit for Miller on Jan. 18 at The Waterfall Room by P&P Catering, 2791 Southampton Road, Philadelphia from 8 p.m. to midnight. Proceeds will go toward Miller's monthly cost of medicine — about $2,200. Insurance does not cover the cost of medications completely. Donations are being…

A second-annual golf outing on Sept. 29 in Coopersburg will help make Paul Wensel Jr.'s life a little bit better. According to Angie Mountain of PhillyBurbs.com, the "Play for Paul" golf outing will occur at Locust Valley Golf Club. Wensel Jr., of North Wales, is a graudate of Lansdale Catholic High School, according to the article. He was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in December 2010, according to the article. Proceeds from the inaugural event allowed Wensel's family to purchase a used handicapped van, according to the article. Modifications were also made to his bathroom to make it more accessible. More than 75 people came out in support of Joyce Dutton, who was recently diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease.
A group of more than 75 residents gathered at the upstairs bar of Molly Maguire's on Saturday night, in support of Joyce Dutton, who was recently diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease. The event featured food, drinks, music by DJ Sgrigs, various raffles, and a silent auction. Family and friends partied it up from 8 p.m. to midnight, and even a few unknowns got in on the act, sending up donations from the downstairs bar. Thanks to Molly Maguire's generously donating half of the entry costs, and Dynasty Sports supplying an array of unique sports memorabilia for auction.
