Former NP Teacher Saks Succumbs to Tumor, Benefit Continues

Mike Saks was a physics teacher at North Penn High School in the mid-90s, as well as a coach for wrestling, softball and tennis

Lansdale native Mike Saks was a wrestling star in the mid-1980s at North Penn, accomplishing the 1984 sectional championship in his weight class and being the 1985 state qualifier in his weight class during his senior year. He would go on to coach wrestling at the high school, in addition to coaching girls' softball and girls' tennis. He was also a physics teacher at North Penn High School in the mid-90s, and even taught math and coached at Pennridge High School later in his career. Like a good wrestling match, Saks would face a beast not once, but twice, in his life. He was able to pin and beat a brain tumor almost five years ago. In an unfortunate rematch, and nearly an eight-month battle, Saks succumbed to a brain tumor Monday morning …

Mr saks was a great teacher, though math was never my subject he was always a cool guy. He actually asked me to babysit his kids senior year so he and his wife could chaperone the prom. He definitely lived his life to the fullest, he always told us stories about skydiving and the phillies and always referred back to metallica. It's been 2 or 3 years since I've had him, but he definitely left an …   more ›

Random Acts of Kindness

Fire victims Crystal Robb and Bob Pitner received support from many people, some of whom they had never met.

Four weeks ago, Crystal Robb and Bob Pitner watched as their North Wales home burned down, along with everything in it.  A month later, while still living out of a hotel, a benefit was hosted to raise money to help them rebuild. The fire couldn't have happened at a worse time. Bob has been unable to work since mid-November due to two separate surgeries, and his girlfriend, Crystal, was 28 weeks pregnant with twins. Facing a dire circumstance, they began to receive support from residents and businesses, many of whom they didn't even know. The Reporter ran a front page article about the fire, and followed up with a second page article about their situation, also adding information where donations could be made.  Word quickly spread through …

Benefit Thrown for Local Family Displaced by Fire a Success

Jennifer Koch and her 8-year-old son Brody lost almost everything when a fire destroyed their Horsham apartment in January

Check out additional photos from this event at our Facebook page. The Third and Walnut Bar and Grill was the scene as local residents packed the building for a beef and beer to benefit Doylestown resident Jennifer Koch and her son, Brody, who were both displaced by an apartment fire only a few weeks earlier. Background on the fire Koch and her son Brody moved into a new apartment Jan. 1.  After a couple weeks of getting settled in, a fire started on the first floor as the landlord was soldering in the bathroom. The wall caught fire, and the blaze quickly spread to the second floor, engulfing Brody's room and severely damaging the rest of the apartment. "It took out my son's bedroom, our kitchen, bathroom, and half of my bedroom.  The rest …
