The Nation Celebrates a Birthday: Dr. Seuss Turns 109

The legendary children's author would have been 109.

Though he passed away in 1991, Theodor Seuss Geisel, known to most as simply Dr. Seuss, would have turned 109 years old Saturday, March 2. The nation celebrates his birth with storytimes, classroom activities and fond reflections of favorite stories. Did you know that Dr. Seuss never really was a doctor of any sort? According to GoodReads.com, he'd gone to Oxford to obtain a doctorate of literature, but never finsihed his degree. Instead, while on board a ship on a European vacation, he crafted "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street." He inspired authors (and children) across the world when, after being rejected by 43 publishers, he got a friend to publish his first work in 1937, according to Seussville.com.  Read Across America …

The Baby Is Growing Up

Montco Mommy's youngest soon won't be so young.

Tonight is the last night my baby girl will be 4. By tomorrow, technically at 4:44 p.m., she will turn 5. As a mother, I struggle with her getting older. Some days, I can’t wait to, say have a beer with my daughter. Other days, I miss how her tiny baby hands would curl around my finger. I can’t decide if I want her to stay tiny forever or get older. One major fear I often think over is her teenage years. If there is any truth to “bad karma,” I’m probably due for some rough years in there somewhere. As hormones start to influence her decisions, tone of voice and attitude toward her mother, we could have some issues. We are a lot alike, to be honest. I know when we butt heads it is because I’ve produced a daughter that is as stubborn, …

I hope you had a nice party day! Sorry this is belated. My youngest is 13 and he was such a sweetie growing up to the teen years. Minor crying spells, if any. No tantrums. Never argued the word NO, ( until lately). Has always looked after the special ed kids at school and became their friend. The neighborhood playground you could find mothers just waiting for my son to come to play with their …   more ›

Happy Birthday Mommy!

Our Montco Mommy struggles with that annual curse – her birthday – and ponders her wish list for the perfect gift.

It is that scary time of year. It is a time of year I tend to try to ignore. But for some reason, they keep on coming every 365 days or so. This week is my birthday. Gross. I think somewhere after 21, the thrill is gone. I think that’s about when you stop looking forward and start dreading another digit adding to that immense total. Up until then, you are anxious to see another calendar year flip. You can’t wait until you are a whole hand. You are so excited to hit double digits. Then there are teen years, and you seem so much “cooler” with a “teen” in your age. Soon, you are counting the days until you can have a license. You are so excited to officially become an adult (and yes, for some of us dorks, even excited to vote for the first …

Cheers to One Year

Montgomeryville-Lansdale Patch celebrates its one-year anniversary today - and it wouldn't be a success without the readers

It was 365 days ago when Montgomeryville-Lansdale Patch premiered on the Internet and began covering the daily news of Lansdale Borough, Montgomery Township and the North Penn School District. Here we are, celebrating our one-year anniversary today. And it couldn’t have happened without you. In December 2010, I left The Reporter in Lansdale after six years to embark on a new, pleasantly-scary adventure of running an online-only daily newspaper. I became a friendly competitor to my former employer. But not to worry – nearly 15 years of journalism experience, a drive for challenging myself, a passion for writing and a love of my community are the reasons I wake up every morning and do this 24/7 job. The proudest accomplishment of the site, …

Oh, the Places You'll Go ... to Celebrate Dr. Seuss

North Wales Library was one of many libraries nationwide celebrating Read Across America with stories by Dr. Seuss on the author's birthday.

They didn't read with their eyes shut—and there were not any green eggs and ham, Sam I Am, to snack on—but more than 30 children and their moms had a fizza-ma-wizza-ma-dill time during the Read Across America Dr. Seuss Celebration at North Wales Library Wednesday afternoon. "Today, we had a special storytime that featured Dr. Seuss books, Dr. Seuss crafts and giveaways for it," said Jayne Blackledge, director of the North Wales Library. "Every March 2, we celebrate Dr. Seuss Day." Chidren were able to play around with one another and sit as staff member Vicki Cresswell read books such as "Green Eggs and Ham." She also lead an impromptu "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" game. After the readings, children were able to do an art activity by …

Whatever you are, be a good one

Happy birthday to one old, bearded, persistent dude

Today is one very important day on the calendar. It is Honest Abe’s birthday. When I decided to find out more about Abraham Lincoln, I didn’t know how interesting this guy was.   The hardest part for me was deciding what bits of information to share in a short amount of space. Honest Abe, born in 1809, was one cool dude.  To learn more about him, I looked over a lot about what he was famous for: speaking. Read these to your kids, friends or family, and talk about what each means. Here are some of his notable quotes from Quotations Page: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”   “If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?” “You can fool some of the people some of the time, and all of …

The anti-Martha Stewart mommy

One mother's determination to make an unforgettable birthday. It's a good thing.

God has the devil. Superman has Lex Luthor. The Philadelphia Eagles have the Dallas Cowboys. For there to be a perfect balance in the world, for everything positive, there must be an equal negative to create a level playing field. If I had to pick my polar opposite, it would be Martha Stewart. I couldn’t be more different. I have a hard time keeping a clean house, let alone do I press my guest towels. I usually cook something out of a box or a can, and seldom even follow a recipe, let alone create my own. Regardless, it doesn’t mean that, as a mommy, I don’t want my kids to have the things I imagine Martha Stewart may create if she weren’t a robot. (Let’s face it; no human being can do all of those things.) One of the things I do try to go…

A birthday present that has been long overdue

In loving memory of Barbara Heffintrayer: A son's tribute

Last Feb. 1, I spent the day with my mother at the nursing home for her birthday.  She unwrapped her presents, asked how school was going, and we made plans for her to come home for Easter.  Had I known that was going to be the last birthday I would ever spend with her, I would have said and done so much more. In my 30 years, I've lost friends and family members, but nothing could have ever prepared me for the emptiness that results from losing a mother.  Every single cliche I had ever heard about loss rang true, as food lost its taste, and sleep became a distant memory.  I found myself sitting alone, listening to the same song on repeat, unable to make sense of what I was feeling. I've always been able to handle highly stressful …
