Housing Authority Faces Major Federal Funding Cuts

Still in recovery from Sequestration, the Montgomery County Housing Authority looks at options for saving even more.

Federal funding is already stretched thin when it comes to Pennsylvania's housing authorities. Montgomery County is no different. Still feeling the hurt from cuts known as "sequestration," the county's Housing Authority is now reviewing what to do with even less. According to Herald-Mail.com, the state is facing deeper cuts to federal funds, "prompting them to shed employees, cut back rent vouchers or put off repairs to housing they own," according to the report. "The cuts leave some housing authorities without enough money to meet existing lease agreements with private landlords, although HUD has suggested that it will cover those deficits, said Joel Johnson, executive director of the Montgomery County Housing Authority, which is among …

Sequestration in Montgomery County

Sequestration's Impact on Montgomery County

The First in a Four-Part Series: Many of the county's programs will be hit by the federal government's potential budget cuts.

Congress is on the clock. If changes are not made by Thursday at midnight, those across the nation will be affected by sequestration. The automated budget cuts will deliver a hit to Montgomery County programs, affecting many in the area. "Unless Congress acts by March 1, a series of automatic cuts — called the sequester — will take effect that threaten hundreds of thousands of middle class jobs, and cut vital services for children, seniors, people with mental illness and our men and women in uniform," said a release from the White House. The president has laid out his own plan for cutting the budget, but said that he is challenged in Congress. "Unfortunately, many Republicans in Congress refuse to ask the wealthy to pay a little more by …

Sequestration Cuts Could Hurt PA, Fort Indiantown Gap

Military looks to cut $34 billion with cuts to defense budget

Few Americans can likely define "sequestration," but since the "fiscal cliff" is over, it's time to update your political vocabulary. The nation's politicians are seeking to shrink the country's spending, and one place the government wants to cut back is through military spending. "The cuts scheduled to begin March 1 take a huge bite out of the federal budget, including the military," said a report on WHPTV.com. "Those cuts will take a disproportionally large chunk out of military spending in Pennsylvania." The state seems to be more hardly hit than others in the country. According to statistics in USAToday, Pennsylvania will be the tenth hardest hit state in the United States. The Commonwealth is slated to lose 10,414 military jobs with …

Corbett Cuts Said to Threaten Montco Economy

Shapiro, Richards join business and non-profit leaders in call to restore health and human services funding to state budget.

Montgomery County Commissioners Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards joined State Representative Matt Bradford (D-70th) and non-profit and business representatives on the steps of the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown on Thursday to denounce cuts to health and human services in the proposed Pennsylvania state budget for 2012-13. Referencing the recent controversy over Governor Tom Corbett's statement that Pennsylvania women who didn't want to see a pre-abortion ultrasound should "close their eyes," Shapiro claimed that Corbett had "closed his eyes" to the plight of "the most vulnerable [people] in Pennsylvania." "We're here to say to Governor Corbett and our friends in the legislature, open your eyes to the reality of what a 20 …

Steve- I do understand how taxation works and I also understand that without taxing the oil companies your also letting revenue leave the State and then have to cut programs that hurt many people. I'm all for cutting waste like the State Liquor Board. That in itself is a waste of tax money as well many other State agencies that are out dated or ineffective. They should look at reducing the number…   more ›

Passing the Buck: Governor Corbett Unveils New Budget

Corbett's plan includes more than $1 billion in educational cuts

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett unveiled his budget Tuesday afternoon, and though the budget comes in at 3 percent below last year's, the steep cuts in education cannot be ignored. Corbett proposes cutting over $800 million from the public school system, by eliminating more than $250 million in grant money, and slashing $550 million from K-12 public schools. Additionally, state-owned universities will be facing a budget reduction of more than $625 million, which represents more than half of their previous budget. So what does this all mean? While Governor Corbett seems to have achieved his goal of not implementing any new taxes, all he has done is passed the buck to students and Pennsylvania residents. In order for public schools to …

College tuition is high enough as it is, and we can all probably agree that amount surpasses the quality of education received, hence going to 2 years of MCCC then off to a four year state program. The problem is cutting funding will only push cost to the student. If you think the institutes of higher learning are going to simply say "Well our budget is half of what it used to be. Let's cut …   more ›
