Eastern Dragon in Towamencin Closing June 17

Another business bites the dust at Towamencin Shopping Village.

Another one bites the dust at Towamencin Shopping Village. Chinese restaurant Eastern Dragon is closing June 17, per a report on Chowhound.com. Dollar Tree recently moved out from Towamencin Shopping Village to Lansdale. Via Marconi Pizza Pub is moving soon to Hatfield Pointe in Hatfield Township. Blockbuster went bankrupt, closed, and now a Verizon store opened in its place. Both anchor stores—Genuardi’s and Sears Hardware—left years ago. Eastern Dragon’s Montgomery Township store near Costco remains in operation. There are no development plans filed with Towamencin Township for the shopping center.

Blum operates 11 other Friendly’s restaurants, including one in Ft. Washington, according to the article. Blum was also the franchisee of the Friendly’s that closed earlier this year in Hatfield …

Checking Out: The End of Genuardi's

A look at the demise of a supermarket superstar

There one stands - a vacant and empty anchor at the Towamencin Shopping Village at Forty Foot and Allentown roads. There's another - still full of life, but desperately needing a makeover, at Church Road and Sumneytown Pike in Upper Gwynedd. Yet another anchors a shopping center in Spring House at Bethlehem Pike and Sumneytown Pike in Lower Gwynedd. The Genuardi's supermarket chain was once a bustling, top-of-its-class supermarket that offered superior customer service and even more superior grocery selections. It was the Wegmans of its day; a precursor to Whole Foods. When the family-owned chain sold out to Safeway in 2001, its customer service, premier selections and history went with it. Now, a decade later, Safeway is giving up 16 of …

Borders Store at Airport Square Remaining Open

Corporate spokeswoman said a last-minute negotiation between Borders Group and the landlord saved the store from the closing list.

This is one chapter in the book of bankrupt retail agencies that will remain open—and it deals with the Chapter 11 filing by Borders Group Inc. and a local Borders branch. As of March 17, the Borders store in Montgomeryville was on a new list of stores to be closed in the wake of the corporation’s bankruptcy filing. One day later, through negotiations with the landlord, Gatway DC Properties, Inc., of California, the store will stay open for business. “The store, just about a half hour ago, got taken off the closing list,” said Borders Group Inc. spokeswoman Rosalind Thompson, at 12:45 p.m. Friday. “It’s a permanent opening. The landlord came back and gave us some concessions, and we sent a note to the store saying, ‘You are staying open…
