Souderton Student Shadows Firefighters In Honor of Grandfather

Souderton Charter School Collaborative sixth-grader Alexander Armstead, 11, has been shadowing Fire Department of Montgomery Township career and volunteer firefighters as part of a school project. Armstead's grandfather was a former firefighter.

He has a long way to go to fill in the boots, but Alexander Armstead is already one of the team. The soft-spoken 11-year-old sixth-grader at Souderton Charter School Collaborative has been shadowing firefighters at Fire Department of Montgomery Township for the past couple days as part of his school project. "I wanted to go here," he said of his firehouse choice. "My grandpop was a firefighter, but he's retired now." No doubt Alexander would warm the heart of former Philadelphia firefighter Louis Dent if he saw his grandson on Friday. By the end of his experience, Alexander had everything but his own helmet—he had the knowledge of the parts of the fire engine truck, he had notes on how firefighters rescue people, he got an idea of the …

A Living Tribute to the FDNY

The Fire Department of Montgomery Township pays tribute to its fallen brothers

When the Fire Department of Montgomery Township was constructed in the summer of 2002, they made a point to pay a constant, living tribute to the 343 firefighters who were lost on September 11th. From their gear to their vehicles, the FDMT mirrors the FDNY in an incredible way. "Many members of our department—both past and present—were either members of the FDNY or have since retired," said Christopher Mann, Fire Chief of the FDMT.  "These members lost close personal friends and family. Many of our instructors were or are from the FDNY and with the growing bond of the fire service, they became family." Scott Redilla, a Charter member of the FDMT and former Assistant Chief, wrote an essay in July of 2003 explaining why the department chose …

'The Impact of That Day Is Something I Will Never Forget'

A local firefighter looks at how America has changed since Sept. 11.

It's been 10 years since Islamic terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, causing a historic loss of life while simultaneously showing the world that even a superpower can be vulnerable.  While our enemies abroad cheered in the streets and burned the American flag, our nation quickly united—rallying around reports of heroism and bravery on the part of the Fire Department of New York and other emergency responders. After the dust had begun to settle, units from fire companies across America began to converge at Ground Zero, aiding in search and rescue and bringing with them much needed equipment and supplies. Among the volunteers was Towamencin Fire Marshal Kevin Pezzano—then a 20-year-veteran of the fire service. "I …

Brightcliffe Resigning as Montgomery Township Director of Fire Services

Brightcliffe joined the township in 2006, following a 34-year career with the Philadelphia Fire Department. He also served as fire marshal and emergency management coordinator

Bill Brightcliffe has worn three hats with his five-year career at Montgomery Township: director of fire services, fire marshal and emergency management coordinator. Come June 2, he will wear one more: retiree. Montgomery Township supervisors Monday night announced and approved the resignation of Brightcliffe, effective June 2, and commended his dedication to the township and the fire department. “Bill decided to take up the clubs and be a permanent golfer,” joked supervisors chairman Robert Birch. Birch said Brightcliffe was instrumental in establishing the Stump Road fire station and combination volunteer and career fire departments. Brightcliffe, an Ambler Borough resident, spent 34 years with the Philadelphia Fire Department, working …
