Penndale Donates 2,929 Cans to Manna on Main

The math classes at the Lansdale middle school know that Food + Donations = Happiness

Food + Donating = Happiness. This was one equation that 26 Penndale Middle Schoolers will remember for life, following their delivery of more than 2,900 canned goods to Manna on Main Street Friday morning. "Throughout the school, all math classes did a canned food drive," said Sara Heil, Penndale eighth grade math teacher. "We made bar graphs for each of the classes and each student filled in one box per can, to see which class could bring in the most. The winning class is the second-period class. They brought in 234 cans. My five classes overall brought in 825 cans. Overall, for all three grades, they brought in 2,929 cans. We filled 67 boxes and brought them over in four vehicles." Heil said it started 11 years ago with just her math …

Community Races to End Hunger — Even with Carts

Manna on Main Street held its second 5K Race to End Hunger and 1-Mile Fun Run Saturday at Knapp Elementary School in Lansdale. There was also a 120-yard relay race using shopping carts stocked with donated goods

It's not easy to run in flip-flops — and even harder when you're pushing a shopping cart filled with donated goods in a 120-yard relay race. Yet Emily Beynon, 13, and Kim Ehleben, 13, of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Parish School in Montgomery Township — along with classmates Samantha Splendido, 12, and Jackie Campbell, 14 — became the victors of the relay, beating out Manna on Main Street at the nonprofit's second annual 5K Race to End Hunger and 1-Mile Fun Run fundraiser event Saturday at Knapp Elementary School. "Painfully," was Beynon's answer on how she was able to race in flip-flops. "No clue," was Ehleben's answer to the same question. The group of girls were at the fundraiser to collect canned goods as part of a senior project for …

Gould Ready to Channel Manna's Passion as Director

Suzan Neiger Gould, of Ottsville, has been named the new executive director of Manna on Main Street in Lansdale, effective October 1

Suzan Neiger Gould won't be taking the reins as executive director of Manna on Main Street until October 1, but she already has a vision in place to continue the passion and mission of the Lansdale nonprofit. "I've been around long enough to know when I see passionate people that really care about what they're doing and how they're doing it," Gould said. "It's very exciting to work for an organization like that." Gould was named new executive director this week, selected as the top choice out of a pool of 13 prospects by the Manna on Main Street board. Gould, who is at present executive director of Camp Onas Quaker Sleepover Camp in Ottsville, PA in Bucks County, has already had the privilege in meeting the board members, committee members…

Dispatches: Ten Thousand Miles To Feed the Hungry

Local adventure motorcyclist Bruce McKelvy to raise money for local food pantry.

With the recovery from the Great Recession moving at an extremely slow pace, more and more area residents are finding it hard to make ends meet. Some struggle to pay their bills, while others struggle to simply put food on the table.  To help those who need it most, 61-year-old Bruce McKelvy, of Lansdale, will embark on a near 10,000 mile charity motorcycle run on Tuesday morning that will touch each of the lower 48 states, in an effort to raise money for the Compassion Corner food pantry at the Branch Creek Community Church in Harleysville. "I'd just like people to be aware that there is this need in the community," said McKelvy, as he wrapped up his final preparations before his 4:30 a.m. departure. "Even though this is a wealthy area, …
