Letter: Fuller is 'What You See, You Get' Lansdale Councilwoman

Submit letters to the editor at lansdale@patch.com.

I love Lansdale. It's that simple. I have devoted much of my time and effort over the last two decades, and especially the last four years, working to improve the community in which I live. It's what I do. It's who I am. Those of you who remember me from my Knapp Elementary School days know that; those of you who have gotten to know me during my first term on council have learned that. For the last four years, I have proudly served as your elected councilwoman and most recently as your council vice president. I enjoy chairing the Parks and Recreation, Library, and Economic Development committees as well as serving on the Public Safety and Appointments committees. The work I do with these committees allows me to be in constant touch with …

I am new to Lansdale area (2004) and do not live in Lansdale Borough nor is my business located here however I feel compelled to post this comment. I met Mary while we both were volunteering at Manna on Main Street in 2010. Unknown to me at the time Mary was already active in Boro government and while serving together at Manna one day I commented that it seemed to me that Lansdale had potential …   more ›

Lansdale Founders Day Plans 'In Motion'

This year's theme for the third Founders Day event is 'A Town in Motion.' The excursion train will return this year.

Trains will return to Lansdale August 24 for the third annual Founders Day event. The theme for 2013 fits in nicely with the borough's new branding initiative: A Town in Motion. "We went from 'A Town on Track' to 'A Town in Motion'," said Councilwoman Mary Fuller during this week's parks and recreation committee session. Fuller chairs the parks committee in Lansdale, and chairs the nonprofit Discover Lansdale. Fuller said the most popular attraction last year—the SEPTA New Hope & Ivyland Excursion Train—will be back, with a possible extension to the leg of the trip. The round-trip train from Lansdale to Souderton is also on the schedule. Fuller said that train ride may have a change to it. "If it does go to Souderton, a program to enhance …

Founders Day Shirts, Excursion Tickets Now Available

Founders Day will come to Lansdale on Saturday, complete with trains, food and fireworks

Lansdale Borough is five days away from celebrating its 140th birthday - and what better way than with Founders Day. The all-day event begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Lansdale Farmers' Market and ends at 9 p.m. with a fireworks extravaganza. Bonus: It's also the Lansdale Festival of the Arts in Memorial Park. "A Town on Track" is the train-related theme for the 140th this year.  So, naturally, train excursions are a big feature this year. Citizens can start celebrating early, as new red Founders Day shirts are available for $10 each right now. Founders Day organizer Mary Fuller said the fire engine red color is reminiscent of fireworks. The shirts feature a circular embelm with a steam train, fireworks and the date of Lansdale's …

Lansdale Fire Marshal Daveler Getting Lifetime Achievement Award

Jay Daveler, the fire marshal of Lansdale Borough, former Fairmount Fire Co. chief and owner of Nostalgic Collectibles and Davro Optical Systems, will be the first recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award at Founders Day

Lansdale son Jay Daveler, who served 44 years as chief at Fairmount Fire Co. and continues to serve as fire marshal, is being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at Founders Day. Daveler found out about his award during a routine management meeting with borough Manager Timi Kirchner and Director of Community Development John Ernst over a cup of coffee at a local eatery. "I was given the assignment and I was thrilled to tell him," Kirchner said. "We had several things to discuss, as he's still the fire marshal. As we went through our business, I said, 'There's one more thing.' He looked at me and said, 'I don't do this very well. It shouldn't be me.' I said, 'Yes, it should.' We went through the reasons why we named him. He was deeply…

Fireworks for 140 Years

The Lansdale Founders Day features fireworks, excursion trains and a Lifetime Achievement Award presentation

So, what do you get for a town celebrating its 140th birthday? Fireworks, trains, art, farmers' markets, free swimming and lots and lots of food. August 25 marks the second annual Lansdale Founders Day event, an all-day entertainment spectacular that marks the 140th anniversary of the founding of Lansdale Borough with the "Town on Track" theme. Maybe you've been seeing the yard signs posted in front yards and right-of-ways in and around Lansdale. If you want one, check out Lansdale Borough Hall or ask for one at Sign-a-rama on West Main Street. The biggest event - aside from the 9 p.m. fireworks best viewed from Penndale Middle School - is the SEPTA New Hope and Ivyland Excursion Train. Councilwoman Mary Fuller said at the Lansdale Council…

SEPTA Commits to Station Revitalization for Founders Day

SEPTA will be fixing up and refurbishing the Lansdale train station and offer excursion tours through the Pennsylvania Northeast Railroad for the community event

There will be a brand new station and brand new trains at Lansdale Founders Day this August 25. SEPTA has committed, in writing, to refurbish and revitalize the Lansdale Train Station in preparation of the 140th anniversary of Lansdale Borough. SEPTA has also helped in securing an excursion train from Ivyland to New Hope, and from Lansdale to Souderton as part of the second-annual community event. Founders Day organizer and councilwoman Mary Fuller teased three weeks ago some big news about Founders Day that would bring in more people from outside the Lansdale, North Penn and Montgomery County regions. "Most of you know we are celebrating 140 years this year, so the Founders Day Committee wanted to do something big. We chose to pick …

Big Announcement on Horizon for Founders Day

Lansdale Borough Councilwoman and organizer of the second annual Founders Day is poised to make a big announcement on June 20 about a new addition to Founders Day that "is bigger than fireworks"

A roller coaster? Ferris wheel? A carnival or freakshow? Laser tag in Memorial Park? Perhaps The Rolling Stones performing on Main Street? Lansdale Borough Councilwoman Mary Fuller promised a big announcement at the council business meeting June 20 on a new addition to the second Founders Day.  "Please come to the business meeting. I will have really big news to share. Almost as big as, if not bigger than, fireworks," Fuller said at the council work session this month. "We are working on some things to draw people from a lot further than the North Penn area. More than just Lansdale." She told the parks and recreation committee that the T's had to be crossed and the I's dotted before she could unveil the big announcement. "We are working on…

Founders Day 'Meant to Be'

The borough's inaugural Founders Day began with praise and ended with fireworks

Maybe she should be the Indiana Jones equivalent of Indiana Jones, for she had unearthed some buried treasure on Saturday. Lansdale Borough’s records manager Sandy Cox showed off the new map hanging on the wall behind the entrance to the office of the borough manager to a visiting resident to the Fouders Day event. Well, “new” in the sense that it hadn’t been seen by recent eyes in a very long time. The same goes for the huge black and white picture of road crews installing the trolley line down Main Street – if you remember the SuperFresh that was at Assi Plaza in Montgomery Township, then you remember the reproduced photograph. Her most prized artifacts were the original 1872 ordinance book and 1872 meeting minutes, exhibited under glass…
